Fans of the Metal Gear Solid series might have a heart attack when they see this news. Apparently, Hideo Kojima (the series creator, for those who don't know), has personally expressed interest in seeing the original Metal Gear Solid remade using the Xbox One next gen graphics technology. Specifically, Kojima is actively seeking a developer who will use Kojima Productions' custom Fox Engine (the same one used in the new Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain) in order to do a remake of the original title, along with his guidance and input.

That's not all either. There is already a third party developer who has thrown their hat in the ring of potential contenders. Here's a quick quote with more of the details,

Quote:

In an open letter to Kojima, British developer Just Add Water has expressed a desire to work with the series' creator to remake the game.

By way of credentials, JAW cites "experience working with legendary IP (Oddworld Inhabitants) and treating the subject matter with the respect it deserves," along with having a team built of "huge Metal Gear fans, with very good knowledge of the source material" and the fact that everyone there "really, really want[s] to do it."

Having previously created the HD version of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, Just Add Water has certainly proven itself adept at respectfully working with other people's franchises. Kojima has looked for a western developer before too, to work on the Metal Gear spinoff, Metal Gear Rising.

This is exciting news for Metal Gear fans, but it also activates the imagination to some exciting possibilities. How many other classic games from the past would be amazing to see redone with current graphics technology? Obviously, shiny graphics do not necessarily make a game better, but if you can keep the same mechanics, gameplay and flavor in a game, yet improve the graphics exponentially compared to the past, couldn't it make for an even more amazing experience? What do you guys think?

Just to whet your appetite, above is the GDC game engine trailers for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Everything you see uses the in-game Fox Engine, and none of it is pre-rendered. We chose this video instead of the E3 demo because this one showcases some of the details of the engine itself. Imagine the possibilities!
