Return migration of the sandhill cranes has begun

Cranes are leaving their wintering homes in New Mexico and Arizona and heading north. Many will stop to rest for a short time in the San Luis Valley at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. Some may make a brief stop in the Eckert/Delta area south of Grand Junction. The first arrivals in the Yampa Valley are expected sometime during the first or second week of March.

The Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition (CCCC), presenters of the annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival, is again sponsoring the First Crane Sighting Contest.

Participants are invited to document their first sandhill crane sighting by either emailing a photo to Colorado

Cranes@gmail.com or mailing a photo to CCCC headquarters: 40625 County Road 69A, Hayden, CO 81639. Include the date, time and location of the sighting, as well as any other pertinent details.

A prize will be awarded to the individual with the photo of the earliest sighting. At the end of March, all entries will be acknowledged on the CCCC website, www.colora

docranes.org  In addition, the winner’s name and photo will be posted on the website and Facebook page.

This year’s Yampa Valley Crane Festival will take place Sept. 10 to 14. For more information about the CCCC and the Yampa Valley Crane Festival, visit the Yampa Valley Crane Festival website at www.coloradocranes.org.
