Mainstreet Steamboat Springs will hold its annual meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 15 at Sweetwater Grill. The featured speaker will be Julie Underdahl, executive director of the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District. She will be discussing how the district has benefitted from a Business Improvement District, what services and activities the BID funds, how the BID works and how the BID has addressed concerns of stakeholders.
“As the newly seated BID board begins to move toward a TABOR election to fund the already existing Downtown Steamboat Springs BID, this is the first step in engaging the stakeholders in creating the downtown they envision,” MainStreet program director Tracy Barnett stated in a news release.
Routt County United Way is seeking grant applicants
Qualified human service agencies and nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply for the Routt County United Way funding cycle. Routt County United Way provides a united effort to anticipate the health and human service needs of the community and to raise and allocate financial resources to help meet these needs through member agencies. Tickets available for the Winter Carnival Sorel Soiree

Grand Futures offers alcohol training classes
Grand Futures is hosting its Alcohol Responsibility Training classes at the Steamboat Springs Community Center from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16. This class is an accepted certification for alcohol responsibility training for servers, distributors and sellers of alcoholic beverages in Steamboat Springs and Routt County and is now accepted by the state of Colorado. Grand Futures is a nonprofit organization and fees collected from this class go directly to the group’s programs and activities that promote healthy lifestyles for youth. Flock your friend’s yards with fundraising flamingos
In honor of National Mentoring Month, Partners in Routt County is encouraging community members to “flock their friends” throughout the month of January. For $20, you can request a flock of 10 flamingos to be placed in a yard of your choice. The flock will roost for about 24 hours before migrating to another yard. Afraid you might get flocked? Purchase anti-flocking insurance to protect your yard. Funds raised help to support Partners’ mentoring programs. ‘We are the Water’ series artist seeks volunteers
“We are the Water” is a series of free community events celebrating the Legacy Education Fund and place-based education in the Yampa Valley. Events in Library Hall at the Bud Werner Memorial Library include:
■ an evening with author, educator and local historian Belle Zars and environmental artist Sonja Hinrichsen on Jan. 22;
■ an evening with director of The Nature Conservancy Yampa River Program Geoff Blakeslee and author and environmental scientist Wendy Pabich on Jan. 23
■ an interpretive workshop with Hinrichsen, “We are the Water: How to Behave Like a Drop of Water Flowing into the Yampa,” on Jan. 24.
The celebration culminates in a place-based snow drawing at Lake Catamount on Jan. 25. The local community is invited to join Hinrichsen in creating this large, landscape-scale work of art that will highlight local watersheds. Participants
