The 2014-15 high school swimming season featured some strong Main Line squads. The Radnor boys (12-0) were undefeated, winning the Central League championship, followed closely by Conestoga. Malvern Prep was the InterAc champion, going undefeated in the I-A loop and losing only one match all season, to PIAA state champion LaSalle. Haverford School was second in the Inter-Ac and Episcopal Academy (boys) placed sixth at Easterns. Friends’ Central boys won the Friends School League championship for the 12th consecutive time.

Among the girls’ squads, Villa Maria Academy captured its fifth consecutive PIAA Class AA state title, finishing with 267 points, far ahead of second-place Gwynedd Mercy (145). Two weeks earlier, the Hurricanes rolled to their 13th straight PIAA Class AA District One title, and dominated, scoring 525 points, ahead of second-place Nazareth’s 297.

The Episcopal Academy girls’ squad (7-1) finished third at Easterns. The Radnor girls (11-0) captured the Central League title, with Central foes Haverford High (10-3) and Conestoga (9-3) not far behind.

The All-Main Line high school swimming teams are selected by the coaches. Because Main Line Media News covers 19 high schools, the Main Line Media News sports staff limits the number of sports available to first team, second team and honorable mention – but follows the priority of the coaches’ selections.

What follows are the 2014-15 All-Main Line high school swimming teams:

BOYS – FIRST TEAM

Brian McKenrick, Conestoga – Sophomore was Central League Swimmer of the Year, finishing third in the PIAA state championships in both the 100 fly and 100 back. Holds the school record in the 100 fly.

Kevin Jay, Conestoga – Junior was first team All-Central League swimmer, finishing third in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 breaststroke at the Central League Championships. Qualified for Districts in both events.

Ben Baturka, Episcopal Academy – Junior was seventh at Easterns in 200 medley relay (backstroke leg) and 200 free (broke school record), fourth in 100 backstroke and ninth in 400 free relay (broke school record). All-InterAc swimmer was second in 100 back and third in 100 free at InterAc Championships.

Josh Owsiany, Episcopal Academy – Senior captain and diver finished first at the Eastern Championships (596.35, a LaSalle University pool record and EA school record) and at the Inter-Ac Championships. Holds 6-dive school/pool record with 368.65 points.

Waylon Jin, Episcopal Academy – Senior was eighth in 100 fly and fifth in 100 breast at Easterns; and first in 100 fly and second in 100 breast at the InterAc Championships. Holds school record in 200 medley relay, 100 fly, 100 breast and 400 free relay.

Alex Boratto, Haverford School – Freshman All-Delco first team swimmer finished first in 100 backstroke at Easterns (0:49, automatic All-American, team and school record), fifth in 100 butterfly at Easterns (51:06) and fourth in 100 free relay (45:47 split, automatic All-American). Was first team All-InterAc.

Matt Haigh, Haverford School – Junior was All-Delco Boys Swimmer of the Year, placing second in 500 free at Easterns (4:29, automatic All-American, Delco record), fourth in 200 free at Easterns (1:39.94, All-American consideration and school/team record), sixth in 200 free relay at Easterns, and fourth in 400 free relay (45.85 split, automatic All-American). Was first team All-InterAc and Academic All-American.

Charlie Ryan, Haverford School – Sophomore won Fords’ Most Valuable Player award, and finished sixth in 200 IM at Easterns (1:53.95, school record), fifth in 100 back at Easterns (51.87) and was member of 400 free relay tea that was automatic All-American. First team All-InterAc swimmer also was standout in 100 fly.

Max Roling, Lower Merion – Sophomore was a first team All-Central League swimmer. Finished 13th at PIAA District One Championships in the 500 free, and placed 18th at Districts in 200 IM.

Brien Coghlan, Lower Merion – Sophomore, a first team All-Central League swimmer, was outstanding at the Central League Championships, finishing second in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free.

William “Billy” Beard, Malvern Prep – Junior was first team All Inter-Ac swimmer, National Catholic champion in the 100 free, Eastern Prep champion in the 100 free; All American in the 100 free and 100 fly, and earned All American consideration in the 50 free and 200 free. Friars’ MVP was on two relays under consideration for All American.

Brandon Fronczak, Malvern Prep – Senior co-captain was first team All Inter-Ac swimmer, holds school record in the 500 free; placed fourth at Easterns in 200 IM, and was fifth in 500 free at Easterns. An Academic All-American, he is under consideration for All-American for 400 free relay, and has committed to Ohio State to swim.

Aaron Salinas, Malvern Prep – Junior was first team swimmer, holds school record in 100 breast; placed fourth in Easterns in 100 breast, is a top sprint free swimmer and is under consideration for All American on two Malvern Prep relays.

Tim Caulfield, Radnor – Senior is the 200 free school record holder, and qualified for the PIAA state championships in the 100 and 200 free, finishing third and 10th respectively in the 200 free and 100 free at the District One championships. Was Central League champion in both 100 free and 200 free. Was also a member of the 200 free relay which broke the school record at the PIAA state championships and was on the state-qualifying 400 free relay.

Eli Avart, Radnor – Senior finished fifth in the 100 butterfly and 15th in the 100 backstroke at the PIAA state championships. Was Central League champion in the 100 fly and 100 back, and finished his Red Raider career as the second fastest in school history in both of his signature events. He was the leadoff swimmer (21.90) on the school record 200 free relay team and also swam on the medley relay which captured the gold medal at the Central League Championships.

Rich Patten, Radnor – Senior finished second in both the 200 free and 500 free at the Central League Championships., then placed 12th in the 500 free and 13th in the 200 free at the PIAA District One championships. Was a member of the 400 free relay team which qualified for the state championships.

GIRLS – FIRST TEAM

Kaitlin Perni, Academy of Notre Dame – Junior holds three school records, and has placed in the top six at Easterns, National Catholics and Inter-Ac Championships all of her three years at Academy of Notre Dame.

Addie Lennon, Academy of Notre Dame – Sophomore finished sixth in the 200IM and 100 breaststroke at National Catholics, 12th in 200IM and 13th in 100 breast at Easterns, and 10th in 100 breast at InterAc Championships.

Margaux Bigelow, Agnes Irwin – Senior co-captain, a first team All-InterAc swimmer, was Owls’ MVP. At Inter-Ac Championships, was sixth in 100 fly, sixth in 200 medley relay, fifth in 100 breast and second in 400 free relay. At Easterns, was 11th in 200 medley relay, 16th in 100 fly, sixth in 100 breast and 11th in 400 free relay.

Riley Flick, Agnes Irwin – Sophomore was first team All-InterAc swimmer, finishing seventh in 50 free, fourth in 100 fly, fifth in 200 free relay and second in 400 free relay at InterAc Championships. At Easterns, was fourth in 100 fly, 12th in 200 free relay, 13th in 100 free and 11th in 400 free relay.

Marin Bloise, Agnes Irwin – Senior diver finished first at Easterns and at the InterAc Championships. Was undefeated as a diver throughout the entire season. In the first meet of the season, she broke her own Agnes Irwin School record and broke the Upper Merion pool record for 6 dives with her score of 300.55. She will dive for Rutgers University next winter.

Valerie Yoshimura, Baldwin School – Senior was InterAc champion in 50 free and 100 free, and finished second in 50 free and 100 free at Easterns. Harvard-bound senior was undefeated in all individual dual meet events during the season. Holds nine of the 11 Baldwin swimming records, and was the engine that drove the Bears to a best-ever sixth-place finish at Easterns.

Amber Zimmerman, Conestoga – Senior was first team All-Central League swimmer, was recognized as an All-District swimmer and was the Pioneers’ MVP. Was all-state in 400 free relay and all-state honorable mention in 200 free relay. Qualified for States in 100 back and 200IM.

Caroline Apathy, Conestoga – Sophomore finished ninth at the PIAA state championships in the 100 butterfly. Was recognized as all-state in 400 free relay and 100 butterfly. Was All-Central League first team and recognized as All-District swimmer.

Madison Ledwith, Conestoga – Freshman was all-state in 400 free relay, all-state honorable mention in 200 free relay and was recognized as All-District swimmer. Also was All-Central League first team swimmer.

Sarah Baturka, Episcopal Academy, Junior swam butterfly leg (25.86) of the All American medley relay team that finished first at Easterns. She also finished second in both 200 IM (2:06.28) and 100 breast (1:06.06) at Easterns. All-Inter-Ac swimmer also shone at the Girls Independent School Championships, finishing first in 200 medley relay, fourth in 200 IM and third in 100 breast.

Emma Seiberlich, Episcopal Academy – Sophomore swam backstroke leg (26.49) of the All American medley relay team that finished first at Easterns. She also finished first at Easterns in 100 butterfly (54.80) and 100 back (55.28, set school and county record). All-Inter-Ac swimmer also did well at Girls Independent School Championships, where she was first in 200 medley relay, 100 back and 100 fly.

McKenzie Street, Episcopal Academy – Senior co-captain swam breaststroke leg (29.78) of the All American medley relay team that finished first at Easterns. She also finished fifth at 100 fly (57.08) at Easterns, and third at 100 breast (1:06.20). All-Inter-Ac swimmer also performed well at Girls Independent School Championships, where she finished first at the 200 medley relay, third at 100 fly and first at 100 breast.

Rachael Farmer, Episcopal Academy – Senior co-captain swam freestyle leg(24.46) of the All American medley relay team that finished first at Easterns. Finished fifth in 50 free (24.73) and 15th in 100 free (55.09) at Easterns. All-InterAc swimmer also performed well at Girls Independent School Championships, where she was first in 200 medley relay, third in 50 free and sixth in 100 free.

Maddie Hart, Haverford High – Junior was PIAA state champion in the 100 fly (54.14), and placed second at States in 100 back (54.98). Was All-Delco Girls Swimmer of the Year, as well as Central League Swimmer of the Year. Was automatic All-American for 200 medley relay (fifth in the state), 100 fly and 100 back. Also was strong 100 free swimmer, and was state qualifier in the 400 free relay.

Emily Wolfe, Haverford High – Senior finished 19th at States in 100 fly. First team All-Central League swimmer was Automatic All-American in the 200 medley relay (fifth in the state). Was state qualifier in the 200 medley relay, 100 fly and 400 free relay. Also was a strong 100 free swimmer.

Sarah Silberg, Lower Merion – Junior, a first team All-Central League swimmer, was a standout at the Central League Championships, finishing third in the 200 free and third in the 500 free.

Julia Cullen, Radnor – Sophomore, a first team All-Delco and All-Central League swimmer, was a PIAA state finalist in the 100 fly, and a state semifinalist in the 100 free. She was the leading point scorer for the Central League champions (11-0).

Laura Packer, Radnor – Senior captain, a second team All-Delco swimmer, was a PIAA state semifinalist in the 200 medley relay. She was a top 20 swimmer at Districts in both the 100 fly and 100 free. She was the last swimmer (400 free relay) in the Red Raiders’ come-from-behind victory to preserve Radnor’s undefeated season.

Sasha Smolyansky, Radnor – Sophomore was the second-highest point scorer for the Central League champion Red Raiders. An extremely versatile swimmer, she was a Districts qualifier in 50, 100, 200 and 500 free, as well as 100 back and 200 IM.

Emily Cornell, Villa Maria Academy – Junior was second in the 100 backstroke at the PIAA Class AA state championship, posting 55.94. She also was a key part of the victorious 400 free relay at States. At Districts, she was second in 100 back, and part of the victorious 400 free relay team that won by a full three seconds.

Julie Dobson, Villa Maria Academy – Senior captain was a key part of the victorious 400 free relay at the PIAA Class AA state championships, and at Districts, she was part of the victorious 400 free relay team that won by a full three seconds. Provided valuable swimming and leadership to the District One and state champion squad.

Maura McManus, Villa Maria Academy – Sophomore was fourth in the 100 free (52.24) at the PIAA Class AA state championships. Was a key element of the victorious 400 free relay at States, as well as part of the victorious 400 free relay team that won by a full three seconds at Districts.
