Jersey Mike’s raised $31,000 this year for the Student Heart Check, a partnership between Beaumont Children’s Hospital and 97.1 The Ticket that provides free heart screenings for students. The amount raised was nearly a threefold increase over the previous year.

“Last year we raised about $12,500, so to go from $12,500 to over $30,000, we’re very, very happy with it,” said Peter Shipman, area director for Jersey Mike’s in Michigan.

“We do a lot of work when we open stores to work with various high schools and charitable organizations, and we thought that Student Heart Check, Children’s Miracle Network, was a perfect tie-in to that,” Shipman continued. “We love it because it goes hand in hand with our brand, and it’s good to, at the end of the day, feel like you put in a good day’s work and at the same time you’re making a difference, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Screening students for abnormal heart structure and rhythms is an effort close to the heart of Bill Biga, Jersey Mike’s vice president of operations.

“It’s really important to me,” Biga said. “I have high school-age kids, and every year we do this now, for the last two years, last year and this year when it’s just about to kick off, there was one of these sudden cardiac deaths in kids, and it hits the news, and it just reinforces that it’s a great program. For us, it’s kind of an honor to be able to help.”
