WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A project that started out in Concord, North Carolina has made it’s way to the Cape Fear.

“With all the negativity we’re seeing lately with police officers, especially with their families you know with all of this, seeing officers that we know are good people, good men and good women, we wanted to do something positive to show them that they are loved and are appreciated by our community members,” said Adopt a Cop volunteer Sarah Oxford.

Adopt a Cop is a way to do just that, folks can take in an officer and simply reach out and say thank you.

“When our husbands or our spouses go out to work everyday, we’re able to tell them that we love them and appreciate what they’re doing and that we’re proud of them. But we wanted to give the community the opportunity to do the same,” said volunteer Melonie Davis.

From Wrightsville Beach to White Lake, from sheriff’s deputies to campus police, any and all law enforcement officers are included in the program.

“I think yesterday or maybe the day before we had about 500 officers adopted and as of 11:00 last night our totals were over 1,100. So it’s growing rapidly,” said volunteer Penny Kelley.

Agencies involved include: Leland Police, Navassa Police, Northwest Police, Shallotte Police, Southport Police, Oak Island Police, Boiling Springs Lake Police, Holden Beach Police, Sunset Beach Police, Ocean Isle Police, UNCW Police, Wilmington Police, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Pender County Sheriff’s Office, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Holly Ridge Police, State Highway Patrol, Probation and Parole, Lake Waccamaw Police, Warsaw Police, Carolina Beach Police, Kure Beach Police, Surf City Police, CFCC Police, Brunswick Community College Police, Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, ALE, Tabor City Police, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Burgaw Police, Whiteville Police, New Hanover Regional Medical Center Special Police, and Wrightsville Beach Police.
