WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) – Senior soccer standouts Colin Bonner and Maddie McCormick received the Thomas V. Moseley Awards as UNCW’s top student-athletes for 2015-16 during the Athletic Awards Banquet on Monday night at the Burney Center.
In addition to being named UNCW’s top male student-athlete, Bonner was the male recipient of the Chancellor’s Cup Award for Athletic and Academic Excellence. Senior Stephanie Bronson of the women’s soccer team was the female honoree of the award.
Junior infielder Lauren Moore of the softball team earned the Soaring Seahawk Award while senior Meredith Bozzi of the track and field team was named winner of the Pat Howey Outstanding Student-Athlete Leadership Award.
The women’s soccer team, which earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament win last fall, claimed the Team Leadership Award and the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion baseball team received the Athletic Director’s Award.
A native of Fulton, Md., Bonner was drafted by FC Dallas in the third round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft following a stellar four-year career with the Seahawks. The three-time All-CAA selection was a First-Team all-league pick after leading the Seahawks with 20 points, scoring seven goals with six assists.
In addition, the First-Team NSCAA All-Midwest Region and All-State honoree became the first UNCW men’s soccer student-athlete to be awarded First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-America® notice and was a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award. A Business Administration major with an outstanding 3.796 grade point average, he made the Dean’s List every semester at UNCW and finished his college career as the ninth-leading scorer in Seahawk history with 61 points.
McCormick became the second UNCW women’s soccer player to receive First-Team All-Region honors from the NSCAA after finishing her senior season tied for the CAA lead with 14 goals and 34 points. A two-time CAA Co-Player of the Week selection, McCormick also received First-Team All-CAA and All-State recognition and guided UNCW to a program-record 15 wins.
The Newark, Del., product ranks fourth in school history with 31 career goals and 78 points and her 16 career assists are the fifth highest total in the program’s annals. She also appeared in 80 career games, third-most in program history, with 69 starts.
A three-year letter winner for the Seahawks, Bronson was the team’s third-leading scorer with six goals and four assists while earning First-Team All-CAA and All-State honors. The Raleigh, N.C., native also received a spot on the All-Region Third Team after netting a team-high four game-winning goals.
An outstanding student with a 3.809 grade point average in mathematics, Bronson was a two-time selection to the NSCAA Women’s Scholar All-South Region Team and received a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Second Team in 2015. She finished her career as the 11th-leading scorer in school history with 16 goals and 41 points.
Moore, a product of Farmville, N.C., earned the ninth Soaring Seahawk Award. She served as president of UNCW’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council and recorded more than 60 community service hours. She also excelled in the classroom, compiling a 3.93 grade point average in her major of Biology, with a double minor of Spanish and Neuroscience.
On the field, Moore has helped the Seahawks to their best season in nearly 10 years with a 27-19 record, including a school-record 23 wins at home. She has started 28-of-34 games this season and ranks among the team leaders with 11 runs batted in.
Bozzi, a senior middle distance runner from Basking Ridge, N.J., holds six school records and ranks among the top-10 in eight different track and field events. The team captain for women’s cross country and track and field is ranked first in the CAA in the 800 Meters and is one of the top runners in that distance in the NCAA East Region.
The women’s soccer team earned the 16th annual Team Leadership Award, presented to recognize an athletic team that demonstrated excellent leadership skills through community service in addition to charitable and educational events. Under the leadership of Coach Paul Cairney, the Seahawks recorded 2,506 hours of community service on 14 different projects during the year while carrying a 3.4995 team grade point average, second-highest in the department, along with earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 11th year in a row.
The baseball team is the second recipient of the Athletic Director’s Award, which was introduced last year to recognize a team that aligns with the athletic department’s strategic goals. Led by Coach Mark Scalf, the defending CAA champion Seahawks recently received their third straight Public Recognition Award from the NCAA and holds first place in the league with an 8-2 conference mark in addition to its 27-9 overall record.
