West Virginia University at Parkersburg has received official notification of its accreditation reaffirmation. The Institutional Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) took action on the college’s new status at its Aug. 12 meeting.

“Throughout this long process, we remained confident that we would receive reaffirmation,” said Dr. Rhonda Tracy, interim president for WVU Parkersburg. “We take enormous pride in this achievement which endorses the quality of our programs. The campus community came together for this common purpose, and the accreditation team’s comments regarding the college highlight our strong commitment to our students.”

In HLC’s final report, the accreditation team noted that it found substantial evidence that the college’s mission guides its operations stating, “There is no doubt that the institution’s mission as it relates to student learning and student well-being is a priority for all members of the institution.”

Additionally, the team noted WVU Parkersburg’s commitment to data-driven decision making as it relates to recruitment, retention and persistence and the college’s emphasis on efficiency and effectiveness.

The report also stated, “Evidence further shows that on an item by item basis, the institution is committed to a problem-solving philosophy – one that enables it to identify and address issues as they arise. This is evident throughout the institution but manifests itself most plainly in instructional activity. West Virginia University at Parkersburg, admirably, places great emphasis on student success.”

The HLC accredits degree-granting postsecondary educational institutions in the North Central region of the United States. It is one of six regional accrediting associations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The HLC was created to develop and maintain high standards of academic excellence. Receiving HLC accreditation means an institution meets recognized standards of education regarding its mission, governance, financial stability, teaching and learning, and relations with its constituents as well as federal compliance requirements.
