The New Zealand Book Council is a national not-for-profit organisation founded as an Incorporated Society in 1972. Their work promotes the love of books and reading, and aims to introduce communities and readers across the country and internationally to New Zealand’s literary wealth. The Book Council is led by Chief Executive Catriona Ferguson and a governing board, chaired by Peter Biggs, which sets the policy and strategic direction for the organization. They are funded by an annual Creative New Zealand grant, donations, charitable grants and the subscriptions of a 1700-strong membership made up of individuals, schools, tertiary institutions, libraries and businesses.

Their activities include providing free writer visits for more than 50,000 students in schools each year; travelling author programmes to inspire educate, entertain and activate communities across the New Zealand; an international programme that supports New Zealand writers to greater success on the world stage; and a quarterly publication called Booknotes.
