The Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) is one of seven out-state NDSU research extension centers. The HREC is located in Hettinger, ND, a city of approximately 1,200 located in the rolling plains of southwest North Dakota. The HREC conducts research in the fields of animal science (cattle and sheep), wildlife and range science, agronomy, and weed science. Hettinger is home to West River Health Services – a leader in rural health care in the US, excellent educational, and community facilities, and internationally recognized hunting and recreational opportunities. Description of duties
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC) is seeking a weed science research technician to provide support for the weed science program in conducting research on weed management practices for crop and forage production systems in southwest North Dakota. Research will be conducted primarily in small grains, pulse crops, oil seeds, pasture, and range.
Responsibilities will include all activities required for the successful execution of a field-based weed science research program. Responsibilities will include field site preparation, planting of field crops, application of experimental herbicide treatments, evaluation of treatments for weed control efficacy and crop safety, harvesting and cleaning seed to determine yield and quality, and collecting and cleaning weed seed to be used in experiments. Herbicide/pesticide treatments will be applied with hand-held and tractor-mounted spray booms.
Research activities will require operation of agricultural farm machinery including tractors, planters, combines, sprayers, etc. Maintenance and calibration of tractor-mounted and hand-held research sprayers will be required.
Duties will include the use of computers and hand-held data collectors and associated software in the collection, entry, and analysis of data.
Trials will be conducted on research station fields as well as on commercial farms, pasture and rangeland. Many duties will require working in outdoor environment with varying environmental conditions and will occasionally require lifting of bags or containers of seed, fertilizer, chemicals, etc.
Assistance in the supervision of graduate, undergraduate and temporary and seasonal staff will sometimes be necessary.
The candidate will have the opportunity to assist in publishing research in field day publications, research reports, and refereed journals. Duties will require occasional travel to field sites and to attend meetings.
Qualifications sought
Minimum qualifications:
B.S. degree in weed science, crop science, agronomy, plant science, range management, or other related field
Familiarity and comfort in the application of herbicides and pesticides and in the calibration of equipment used for pesticide application
Proficient computer skills in the use of SAS or similar analytical program, ARM, word processing, and Excel
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Valid Driver’s License
Hold or be able to obtain a North Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 month of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. degree in weed science, crop science, agronomy, plant science, range management, or related field
Proficiency in using SAS or similar analytical statistics software
Proficiency with using ARM trial management software
Experience with small plot field research, experimental design, data collection and analysis, and operation of farm equipment such as tractors, sprayers, and hand tools
