Description of duties
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Conduct integrated weed management educational programs working closely with Weed Science and other Extension faculty. Responsibilities include developing course content, conducting field days, workshops and meetings in a direct teaching role.
Preparation of instructional materials and teaching in conjunction with other faculty.
The preparation of extension publications and newsletters is an expectation.
Serve as the Weed Science resource person for the Plant Diagnostic Clinic.
Responsible for the identification of plant specimens and diagnosis of plant injury samples submitted by clientele.
Providing recommendations for both short- and long-term management strategies will be part of the incumbent’s responsibility.
Conduct field, greenhouse, and laboratory investigations in conjunction with senior faculty, including data collection and analysis.
Develop grant proposals and solicit external funding for partial or complete support of programming.
Contribute to creating and maintaining a positive, professional image for the University of Nebraska.
Maintain a working relationship with USDA agencies, educational partnerships, community organizations, business and citizen committees for program guidance, linkages and evaluation.
Actively participate in the Food Production & Natural Resources Systems Action Teams.
Assess the impact of program efforts in integrated crop management and report these impacts to the extension board, county officials, University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension Division, community and public leaders, general public, and peers at conferences and meetings.
Correspond with clientele by phone, e-mail, or post.
Participate in service to the department and recruit potential students for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase teaching skills, knowledge of subject matter areas as well as interpersonal and team skills reflective of anticipated program needs.
All educational programs and actions will meet affirmative action requirements and embrace diversity.
Organizational Assignment (Approximately 20%): The focused extension educator will also connect with unit leaders in the region for the purpose of developing local support for UNL Extension. These responsibilities include:
Support the Department of Agronomy & Horticulture with active engagement in faculty meetings and committee assignments.
Cooperate with faculty and staff in a team environment to promote Extension’s educational opportunities in Nebraska.
Foster and build relationships for Extension and a positive, professional image of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
Qualifications sought
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree required; one degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Weed Science or closely related field or demonstrated experience in the focus area. Master’s degree must be completed by start date.
Successful experience teaching in a formal or non-formal setting.
Demonstrated ability to communicate (i.e. publications, web media, presentations).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in working with individuals, coworkers, and teams to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by college, career, and/or community activities.
Outstanding leadership skills as demonstrated by roles in college, career, and/or community activities.
Ability to utilize electronic and online technologies for educational program delivery.
Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences and a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming.
Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including grant writing, fund generation, contracting and/or cost recovery efforts.
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and programs.
Minimum of 2 years experience with agricultural production similar to Nebraska systems.
Some travel is required.
Successful experience in teaching Weed Management education in a formal or informal setting, experience teaching crop producers or their advisors, and a demonstrated ability to network with agricultural industry or public agencies.
