MASON CITY, Iowa (KIMT) – For International Epilepsy Day, one mom had a lot to celebrate.  She explained how much her son has changed all thanks to a new treatment.

Caleb Helland has been suffering from seizures his whole life.  He has intractable epilepsy. Six months ago he became part of a study through the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Doctors have him on cannabidiol oil.  Caleb’s mother says he used to have seizures every day.  After starting the new treatment, he’s only had a total of five seizures in the last six months.

“It’s amazing; it’s such a good feeling.  I look at him every day and think “Oh my Gosh” you’re not having a seizure all day long. It just makes me feel good because I want him to have the best quality of life he can,” Helland said.

Right now it’s legal to possess the oil in Iowa, but illegal to manufacture or transport it into the state.
