LEXINGTON (WSLS-10 SPORTS)- A 3-27 record over the past three seasons has left Rockbridge County High School’s football team grounded. So the Wildcats turned to an old friend who had taught in the county and at the high school a decade or more ago.
“I’m really excited to be back it’s home it’s always been home. We’re just really excited because of the quality of the kids and Rockbridge has always had great kids. I just want to coach them with respect and teach them how to win and just do things the right way,” explains new head coach Mark Poston.
Mark Poston returns to Lexington after three years in Nelson County, but it’s the 2010 season that should jog your memory.
That was the year his football rebuilding project at East Mont culminated in a berth in the Group A Div I title state title game. Now his job is to get the once mighty Rockbridge program back on track.
“Since Coach Poston has come here I’ve loved it. I like it better than my old school and I’m doing well. I think he’s going to take us somewhere that everybody here in the county wants to go,” says Rockbridge lineman Khaydon Brooks.
“We’re starting to come together more and not really focus on individuals. Now we’re just basically one big team. We left off with a bad taste in our mouth and we just got to go after it and get some W’s, says Brice Vanderveer, the Wildcats center.
“We like to think the future is going to be really bright. We got over 70 kids in the program counting our JV and the biggest thing though is the guys bought in from February on, ” says Poston.
Poston needed five seasons in East Mont to reach the pinnacle of HS football…his road back in Lexington…appears to be a bit shorter. The Wildcats open against rival Parry McCluer on August 26th.
