(WSLS 10) – Martinsville City Council could vote to adopt the city’s 2016 Strategic Plan. Over the past year, staff participated in planning session and used the comments from those to develop the revisions. Priorities for the future include a transparent and inclusive government, a safe and attractive community and a high quality educational system.

The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors will vote on a resolution urging the General Assembly to keep the Catawba Hospital open. The resolution states that admissions at the facility have increased 41% in the last year and closing the facility would have negative impacts on the Roanoke Valley. Governor Terry McAuliffe included $1 million in next year’s budget to close the facility.

A person charged in connection to the murder of a man at a Roanoke hotel in June of last year goes on trial today. Brea Ann Belcher of North Carolina is charged with accessory after the fact to murder, which is a class six felony. Police say Geoffrey Ndwiga of Roanoke was found dead on June 29th at the Rodeway Inn on Orange Avenue from apparent gunshot wounds. Jamal Daniels of South Carolina was arrested and charged with first degree murder. Mya Rae Lee was also charged with accessory after the fact of murder.

The Salem High School Football Team receives a national honor tonight. The Army National Guard presents its national ranking trophy to the team as part of the 11th annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions. The honor comes after the team beat Lake Taylor in the Virginia 4A state championship. Salem finished number 86 in the final rankings and is one of 50 schools being honored this year.
