There’s something to be said about summer in New York City. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the evenings don’t seem so harsh with wind that cuts you to your bones. As a matter of fact, NYC evenings can feel so invigorating and enjoyable, you likely won’t want them to end. There are a couple of museums on the island of Manhattan that happen to feel the same way. These three art museums are offering New Yorkers a little something extra to go along with those extra hours of daylight.

The Whitney
This museum of contemporary American art is usually open 6 days a week (closed Tuesdays). However, during the prime summer months of July and August, they’re giving us that extra day and will remain open on Tuesdays from 10:30am until 6pm! That makes for 7 full days to choose from, and a lot more time to choose from when making The Whitney a part of your schedule.

The Frick Collection
Feeling a little old world? The Frick offers an impressive collection of European decorative arts. They’re also hosting an event called “Summer Nights” that will take place once a month for the whole of summer. On June 24, July 15, and August 5, from 6 pm to 9 pm you can visit The Frick sans entrance fee, and take part in an evening of equally free programs reflecting on current exhibitions. And if you’re not into planning in advance or being tied down to plans, you’re in luck, because reservations aren’t necessary. The latest time you can enter during these event-nights, however, is 8:30 pm.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art
As it happens, every summer, The MET, one of the most visited art museums in the world, opens its Martini Bar and Roof Garden Café to the public. Both of these remain in operation until October 31st, at which point that (autumn) chill we were talking about earlier has undoubtedly set in. The café stays open as long as the museum is open—but the martini bar has special hours on Fridays and Saturdays between 5:30 pm – 8 pm. Of course, whether or not these two special attractions are open depends on the weather, but it being summertime now, we think the odds of catching it open are in your favor.

Don’t miss out on these museums in the summer—they’re gems to begin with, sure—but summertime brings a whole new meaning to this City. You’ll see.
