Amidst several claims from Manchester United that they have no designs on German international, Marco Reus, SportsBild have authoritatively stated that as a matter of fact, the midfielder is on Louis van Gaal’s radar. Reus is not a player who is short on suitors, in fact within the English Premiership, three big clubs have been heavily linked with a move to lure him over to the EPL. It has been widely reported that Jose Mourinho could use his services in his high flying Chelsea side, and Manchester City are just never contented no matter the quality of stars they have. Arsenal are also looking to bolster their team which has continually appeared frail for most of this season and finally, a fourth, Liverpool.  Althoughthe Reds are not directly linked to Reus but the sheer number of fans that will like to see Reus ply his trade at Anfield is enough for several media outlets to conclude that the club might yet again yield to the yearnings of their supporters.

To underline the rate of Marco Reus’s demand, two of the world’s biggest football clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona of the Spanish La Liga have also signalled interest in his services. Reports say that Reus particularly fancies a move to Barcelona and was devastated when the Catalan giants made a move on Luis Suarez in the summer despite the Uruguayan’s suspension. What really sparked Reus’s worry is the sanction placed on Barcelona’s transfers which technically implies that the Catalan outfit will not be doing business anytime soon. This development has ruled out his desire to team up with the likes of Messi and Neymar.

Early this week, SportsBild indicated that Manchester United are really in need of this man but before we even consider how realistic that is, at least on paper, we must consider the possibility of Borussia Dortmund releasing him at the moment. His current employers have been enduring tough times since the beginning of this season and to remember them at their best will be to cast one’s gaze back to the Champions League finals where they lost to their bitter rivals Bayern Munich. As if it is not enough to lose such a coveted trophy to Bayern, they have also been arm-wrestled to sell some of their best players to them. Hence, to ensure that young Reus doesn’t ended up with Bayern, his bosses might be considering a move abroad.

Does Manchester United need him? The bitter truth is that at the moment they don’t. Reus is more comfortable on the attacking midfield position but may still be effective if played on the wings but despite his versatility, Louis van Gaal has more than enough options in those positions. There is Rooney, Mata, Januzaj and more recently Herrera all of whom can efficiently pull strings as natural attacking midfielders. On the wings, he has Angel Di Maria, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia and even though the last two have been deployed as wing-backs in recent times, it is still important to note that they both started out their trade as wingers and when the time is right, they will love to revert back to their natural wings.

I personally will like to see Reus at Manchester United but considering the real need of the club at the moment, he is a luxury that the club can’t afford.
