Essential Functions of Position

Under the direction of the Dean of Instruction, duties include recruiting, hiring, training, and monitoring tutors and embedded tutors; teaching tutor training and tutor practicum classes; overseeing effective collaborative reading and writing group tutoring, maintaining effective strategies for walk-in and on-line delivery; upholding academic reading strategies; working closely with all faculty from the Math Center, Tutorial Center and the Madera Extended Learning Center (ELC) and Oakhurst site. Assuring the center meets the writing and reading needs of students; working closely with faculty across the curriculum; coordinating activities to promote and publicize the services provided by the reading and writing center; supporting tutors as they participate inNCWCA or related conferences; developing budget recommendations; maintaining records; conducting studies regarding the reading and writing center; completing program review reports and SLO assessments; participating in academic committee work; and otherwise fulfilling the duties and responsibilities required of the instructional staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Include an earned master’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR bachelor’s degree in any of the above and master’s degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism;

OR

Include an earned master’s degree in education with a specialization in reading or teaching reading; OR bachelor’s degree in any academic discipline and 12 semester units of course work in teaching reading and master’s degree in English, literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, composition, comparative literature, TESL, or psychology;

OR a valid California Community College Credential;

OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency);

AND demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience in coordinating and developing, planning, and monitoring all aspects of a large reading and writing center program; recruiting, training, and evaluating tutors; coordinating personnel; maintaining records and preparing reports; reviewing, evaluating, and assisting in the selection of materials used in tutoring and supplemental learning; knowledge of current reading and writing center methodology; knowledge of reading and writing center theory and experience in tutoring and supervising tutors in a Writing/Reading Center environment, having background in collaborative (group), one-on-one (walk-in), and online tutoring; knowledge of recent assessment methods; teaching experience; experience in the use of technology in an educational environment; ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and faculty; knowledge of the mission of the community college; and demonstrated experience working with a broad and diverse student population.

Conditions of Employment        177-181 duty days

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary is $54,029 – $83,180 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the district offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance for employees. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
