RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Sources tell 8News that Florida-based grocery giant Publix has agreed to purchase 10 of 19 area Martin’s stores. Because the parent companies of both Martin’s and Food Lion are merging, those stores were up for sale.
Wednesday afternoon, managers of those 19 stores met with company president Tom Lenkevich at a Highland Springs hotel. It was there he broke the news about which stores sold, according to a source close to the situation. Afterwards, Lenkevich and the store managers refused to talk about the details out of respect for employees.
Below are the 10 Martin’s locations in the Richmond area that have been bought by Publix:

Colonial Heights
9645 West Broad Street
Glen Allen
10150 Brook Road

“Acquiring these 10 locations aligns with Publix’s aggressive growth plan for the commonwealth of Virginia,” Publix CEO and President Todd Jones said in a release. “We are looking forward to providing Virginians with the high-quality service and products our customers have come to expect and have earned us recognition throughout the industry.”
This move impacts hundreds of workers across as sources indicate that many current Martin’s employees will likely lose their jobs. Publix says it will hold job fairs closer to grand opening dates – which have yet to be announced – and encourages all impacted Martin’s employees to apply for employment.
