WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The Warwick North Little League 11-and 12-year-old all stars received a warm welcome Thursday when their plane landed at T.F. Green Airport.

The team represented the East Region in the Little League Softball World Series – before losing a heartbreaker to North Carolina Wednesday in the championship.

When the team arrived at the airport around 5:05 p.m., dozens of family and friends were there to celebrate their accomplishment.

Eyewitness News was there as the team reunited with their loved ones – and many of the players said they are just happy they made it as far as they did.

“I’m glad that we made it there. That wasn’t even our goal,” explained Dyonna Rodas. “Our goal was just to make it to Oregon. So just being in the finals was just so amazing.”

Many parents who made the trip out to Oregon are still traveling back, Eyewitness News has learned. They’re expected to return later Thursday and Friday.

The coaching staff said the girls fought hard throughout the whole tournament – and like the girls – they are so proud.

“This is something we have always wanted to do but never thought we’d be able to do,” said coach Kevin DeTroia. “These girls deserve 100-percent credit, they are awesome.”

The team, which is made up of girls from both Warwick and Coventry, will now celebrate their achievements.

Mayor Scott Avedisian announced Thursday that a community celebration will be held Monday in honor of the team. The event will take place at the Warwick North Little League facility on Post Road in Warwick (near the intersection of Warwick Avenue) at 6 p.m.

“I know I share the feelings of many Rhode Islanders, and, particularly, of Warwick residents, who are extraordinarily proud of the accomplishments of our Warwick North team,” said Avedisian.

“They displayed tremendous poise and grace, both on the field and off, and their competitive spirit, determination, and good sportsmanship shone brightly throughout the entire World Series. Everyone is invited to Monday night’s celebration, and I hope our residents will join us in honoring this great group of young women and their coaches.”
