(WPRI) – Another massive recall was announced by Toyota that includes more than 6 million vehicles globally and close to 30 models due to a number of safety defects.  Local Toyota dealers and customers say this is becoming a familiar occurrence.

Wednesday’s recall is the eighth since 2009, which totals more than 28 million vehicles recalled for the automaker in less than five years.

Ed Tarbox owns the largest Toyota dealership in Rhode Island and services hundreds of cars per day, but a recall of this magnitude does add a level of stress he says Toyota dealers won’t ever get used to.

“We’re able to step up an infrastructure to handle these things and we have a protocol for that,” he said.

There are two recalls that affect more then 1 million vehicles across the United States.

“It’s nice to finally be in a position where it’s not an emergency thing where cars are catching on fire or unintended acceleration or airbags…that’s not the case here, with Toyota,” Tarbox told Call 12 for Action.

One of the recalls involves a defective spiral cable in the driver’s airbag that could become damaged and cause the airbag to not deploy in a crash.

The affected models include the Corolla, Matrix, and Tacoma from model year 2009-2010.

The other recall involves a defective seat rail, which can cause the seat to move forward unexpectedly. The models involved are the 2006-2010 Yaris hatchback, 2007-2010 Yaris sedans, and certain 2008-2010 Scion XD.

Toyota is currently working on a remedy for these recalls. Once that is complete, customers will be notified when repairs can be done for free.
