Today in 2011: More than 85,000 Wisconsin citizens rally outside the Capitol in Madison to welcome the return to the state of fourteen Democratic state senators.

Known as the Wisconsin 14, they had left the state to deny the senate a quorum, thus delaying passage of legislation which public employees the right to collectively bargain and restricting other rights of union members.

State Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller’s remarked about the the gathering, “This is what democracy looks like!”

The Havens Center Visiting Speakers Program presents Cristina Beltran, Professor in the Department of Cultural and Social Analysis at New York University, who will be giving two lectures this week. Today at 4pm is ‘Latino Republicans: Oxymoron or Future of Conservative Movement?” Tomorrow at 4 is “How Does It Feel? Race, Representation, and Diversity on the Right”.
