Stacey Tappan, soprano
Stacey Tappan has distinguished herself as an exceptional musical artist in the United States and abroad. In stellar reviews for her “witty and sexy” Adele in Die Fledermaus with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, she was praised for the production’s “most polished singing… her coloratura bright and well-focused.” Plaudits for her Gilda in Rigoletto with Opéra de Lille included “the revelation of the evening” – “a luminous Gilda” – “tremendous American soprano” – “a magnificent discovery” and “high notes of a splendid sweetness.” She reprised the role with the Opéra de Dijon in 2010.
Emily Lodine, Alto
Emily Lodine is highly regarded for her impressive musical background. Her artistry, silvery voice and mastery of many styles place her in great demand for both concert and operatic performances. She has appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philip Glass Ensemble, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the symphonies of Omaha, Milwaukee, Detroit, Jacksonville, Indianapolis and Phoenix. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in Handel’s Messiah under the baton of conductor and composer John Rutter. Equally sought after for operatic appearances, she created the role of Verena Marsh in Stephen Paulus’s opera Summer for Berkshire Opera. Other opera credits include Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia with Lyric Opera Cleveland, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with Anchorage Opera, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with Opera Grand Rapids, and Verdi’s Falstaff with the Pine Mountain Music Festival.
James Doing, Tenor
James Doing began his career after joining the Netherlands Opera Studio in Amsterdam which launched an international career in opera. Mr. Doing has sung over 70 operatic roles in Paris, Nice, London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Turin, Stuttgart, Doha (Qatar), New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Santa Fe, Cleveland, Cooperstown (Glimmerglass), Milwaukee, Madison and elsewhere. He has performed Messiah around the world including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and in Tokyo and Osaka, and is the tenor soloist on the world premiere recording of Beethoven’s Kantate auf die Erhebung Leopolds II zur Kaiserswurde with the Krakow Symphony Orchestra. 2011 and 2012 bring sixteen Passions throughout Holland including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and Messiah and Weihnachtsoratorium in Japan.
Peter Van de Graaff, bass
Hailed by the critics as possessing a “resplendent voice” and “rich, burnished sound” with “formidable skill” and a “commanding grace and strength,” bass-baritone Peter Van De Graaff has sung to great acclaim throughout the world. In Europe, he recently returned from Salzburg where he was a featured soloist at the International Vocal Symposium. He has performed and recorded a Mass by Jan Vorisek with the Czech State Symphony under Paul Freeman and has also sung Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis throughout the Czech Republic and Poland with the Czech Philharmonic. He appeared in Berlin with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron. In Budapest, he sang with the Budapest Concert Orchestra in Verdi’s Requiem and in Tel Aviv, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra joined him in a Mozart Mass.

Led this season by conductor Brad Schultz of Luther College (Decorah, Iowa), MACH presents our holiday concerts in a program that parallels the centuries old “Twelve Days of Christmas” carol, chronicling each day and gift in song.
The program begins with Sondra Tucker’s Christmas Carillon, a collage of familiar carols, followed by Kevin McChesney’s setting of The Twelve Days of Christmas, a rhythmic and tonal tour de force, full of interesting twists and turns. The program continues through each of the days of the poem, featuring many guest musicians in addition to the fourteen ringers of MACH. A Partridge in a Pear Tree, or The Lone, Wild Bird (The Hills are Bare at Bethlehem) by Wisconsin composer Paul McKlveen features clarinetist Kim Robey. Local organist Alex Ford joins the choir on Three French Hens, Linda McKechnie’s setting of We Three Kings, and Handel’s familiar Allegro and Hornpipe (Eleven Pipers Piping) set by David Keller. Percussionist Justin Bain will join the choir on Twelve Drummers Drumming, or Carol of the Drum, a new work from the pen of Michael Glasgow, a rising talent in handbell composition.

Clocks in Motion, Madison’s cutting-edge new music ensemble, will present two highly-anticipated world premieres in a performance entitled New Discoveries, Fri., Dec. 13, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in the H.F. Deluca Forum of the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery.
Local composer John Jeffrey Gibbens’ breathtaking new work Allhallows features two unique instruments built by Clocks in Motion: the quarimba, an unconventionally tuned marimba allowing for a 24-note scale, and the galvitone, a set of meticulously tuned steel pipes.
The second world premiere, Percussion Duo, by Tom Lang, is a virtuosic work for one pianist and one percussionist playing marimba and vibraphone simultaneously in a “stacked” arrangement. Lang, a UW-Madison graduate now living in Minneapolis, creates sophisticated and intertwining rhythms and pitches in this piece, resulting in a dynamic interplay between the musicians.
The program will close with Iannis Xenakis’ powerful composition, Persephassa. This masterpiece features 6 percussionists surrounding the audience with an array of drums, gongs, siren whistles, tam-tams, cymbals, wooden bars, and metal slabs. The resulting three-dimensional antiphonal effect makes for an unmatched live experience.

Hailed as “nothing short of remarkable” (ClevelandClassical.com), Clocks in Motion is a group that performs new music, builds rare instruments, and breaks down the boundaries of the traditional concert program. Formed in 2011, the ensemble is currently in residence at the University of Wisconsin School of Music. The individual members of Clocks in Motion’s unique skill sets and specialties contain an impressive mix of musical styles including, rock, jazz, contemporary classical music, orchestral percussion, marching percussion, and world music styles. Among its many recent engagements, the group served as resident performers and educators at the Interlochen Arts Academy, Rhapsody Arts Center, University of Michigan, Baldwin-Wallace University, and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
