SAN RAMON, CAL--(Marketwired - September 29, 2015) - The OSGi Alliance today released OSGi enRoute to help developers get started with OSGi quickly and easily while demonstrating the full dynamic module system benefits of OSGi. OSGi enRoute Version 1.0 is a development environment that includes a complete tool chain based on Eclipse & bnd(tools), the OSGi R6 Core and Enterprise application programming interfaces (APIs), a number of proposed new APIs, and a runtime that provides a consistent set of implementations for these OSGi enRoute APIs.

OSGi is the primary foundation for building modular applications out of components. It is the best approach to build maintainable and scalable systems rather than the more common monoliths and silo-based systems.

OSGi enRoute offers a low threshold into building these modular systems by providing a complete development chain out of the box that demonstrates the purpose of OSGi. The OSGi enRoute tool chain takes advantage of all the powerful capabilities of the OSGi specifications using the best practices known to the OSGi community.

OSGi enRoute is not a specification, it is an open source project maintained at Github with a public website. The project accepts public contributions under the Apache 2.0 License. As an open source project it will become the playground for future specifications as well as a hub of shared bundles.

This first release addresses simple server-based applications all the way to single-page web applications. Templates are provided to create projects for the most common types of bundles.

“We spent considerable effort on getting the foundation right in this development environment so the quick start to OSGi doesn’t compromise benefits or scalability,” said Peter Kriens, an OSGi Fellow and the OSGi enRoute developer. “Users will gain the full advantages of OSGi with true modularity and service-oriented programming, surpassing the limits of other runtime choices.”

OSGi enRoute is being used in the Internet of Things OSGi demonstration and application development contest at the OSGi Community Event 2015. The software development kit is available Oct 1.

OSGi enRoute tutorials make it easy to get started with a working application. OSGi EnRoute current offers quick start, base and IoT tutorials.
