Donald Trump

Barry Diller, the billionaire chief executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp, said if Donald Trump wins the election to the White House, he’s going to leave America.

“I’ll either move out of the country or join the resistance,” he said, CNN Money reported.

At the same time, Diller doesn’t think either scenario will come to pass, and told Bloomberg: “Truly, I’m not moving and I don’t think I’m joining the resistance.” That’s because he doesn’t think Trump holds much of a chance of winning.

But the billionaire, whom Forbes estimates is worth $2.5 billion, is the first this campaign season picked up in the national press, anyway, who has made what’s become a commonplace, campaign season threat: moving from the country if a nondesirable wins.

Hollywood, in particular, is famous for such vows.

In 2000 alone, director Robert Altman promised to leave America for France if George Bush won against Al Gore; actor Alec Baldwin vowed similarly; and singer Elton John, who’s not even an American citizen, but rather British, suggested he’d defect from the United States, regardless.

“[Gore] wants this country to go forward,” John said then, Salon reported. “But it’s back to the Dark Ages, I’m afraid, if you vote for the other guy.”

Diller said Trump is only seeing success at the polls right now because of his rebel nature.

“[He's] a phenomenon of reality television as politics,” Diller said, CNN Money reported. “Donald Trump, all he is is about conflict and all that he is is negative conflict. He’s a self-promoting huckster who found a vein. A vein of meanness and nastiness.”

Diller’s a regular contributor to Democratic Party politics, including the candidacies of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, CNN Money said. But he’s also given money to John McCain’s presidential campaign.
