(Washington, DC) Organization Overview:Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research in the areas of U.S. politics and policy views; media and journalism; internet and technology; religion and public life; Hispanic trends; global attitudes and U.S. social and demographic trends. The Center's work is carried out by a staff of 130.Position DescriptionThe Web Developer is a member of the Digital Publishing unit of the Pew Research Center, works with project staff and outside vendors to maintain a multisite WordPress publishing environment powering eight public web sites that average 2.5 to 3 million unique visits per month. The Web Developer also collaborates with Center staff on creating digital features, interactives and data tools. The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of the WordPress application, templating, custom plug-in development and deployment and database optimization, as well as strong skills in HTML, PHP, MySQL, CSS and JavaScript. The Web Developer reports to the Director of Digital Strategy.Responsibilities:

Act as lead developer of custom multisite WordPress environment powering eight web sites in the Pew Research network, ensuring scalability, security and usability for end-users

Build new, and maintain existing templates and custom applications using HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript/jQuery, JSON, XML, etc.

Collaborate with researchers, designers, editors and communications staff to develop custom data-driven online features, visualizations, tools and public databases

Ensure that all code is error-free, scalable, search engine optimized, accessible and renders effectively across multiple browsers, operating systems, and device types (Desktop, mobile, tablet, etc.)

Ensure WordPress core and necessary plugins are fully patched and up-to-date

Provide Quality Assurance and testing of other team members' code

Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and style guides

Work with web hosting vendor and IT Systems and Network Engineer to ensure website security and high availability system uptime for all web sites and custom applications

Work with Analytics and Taxonomy specialist to configure, update and optimize Google Analytics tracking codes and site metadata for search, social and Google Search Appliance

Consult with project stakeholders on emerging trends and best practices in online media dissemination and digital publishing

Candidates with prior supervisory experience may have opportunity to act as team-lead, and/or supervise other members of development team

Education/Training/Experience:

5 to 10 years' professional experience developing web, mobile and other digital projects, preferably at a news organization, think-tank or non-profit organization

3 to 5 years' experience with WordPress, including advanced knowledge of the application, custom themes, templating and plug-in development and database optimization

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

Experience developing custom, scalable web applications using PHP, JavaScript/jQuery, MySQL, JSON/XML, etc. in a LAMP environment

Experience with data visualization products (Highcharts, D3.js, etc.)

Experience working in a collaborative environment on digital product development (editorial, visual design, UX, marketing, etc.)

Experience developing APIs, and managing data from external APIs.

Experience developing custom, scalable web applications JavaScript/jQuery, MySQL, JSON/XML, etc. preferably in a LAMP environment.

Experience reviewing designs/wireframes and pointing out potential development concerns.

Experience managing a shared codebase with other developers using Git, Subversion (SVN) or other version control system.

Knowledge of responsive design principles, cross-browser development, accessibility, and a solid understanding of the principles of web usability, information architecture, responsive design and search engine optimization

Experience importing and managing data from external sources and APIs

Strong organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines
