ABOUT THE POSITION

Outward Bound Canada is looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking individual who has the credentials and capacity to work in the Ontario Wilderness (with occasional work in our Toronto Centre) providing exceptional educative programming to students, teachers, and schools.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the health and well-being of students while on program.

Effectively utilize group and risk management skills, maturity and role modeling in line with the values of OBC to create a safe and supportive environment for student-centered learning.

Facilitate positive peer interactions among students.

Manage in-field risk management decisions.

Present clear and effective lessons to engage students in learning.

Utilize different methods and styles of teaching.

Monitor, assess and evaluate students.

Work effectively with different populations.

Achieve the objectives of the Outward Bound Canada National Safety Policy.

Complete various program related administrative documents and tasks.

Coordinate the transfer of course information to Program Manager and Course Director.

Organize and facilitate program evaluation process.

Participate in the training and mentoring of staff in program delivery procedures.

Provide on-call service, manage or execute evacuations and other field responses.

The majority of work with begin in Katrine, ON. Instructors may also be asked to work in Toronto, ON. Instructors are responsible for arriving at either work location.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE DESIRED

Minimum one full season of work experience leading wilderness canoe trips.

Ability to instruct canoe tripping, backpacking, snowshoe, wilderness travel, campcraft skills, ground initiatives, low ropes, rock climbing, and high ropes elements and assess associated risks.

Commitment to the growth and development of others on an individual, group and societal level.

Compassion for people and for the health of the environment.

Understanding and application of Outward Bound Canada methods and philosophy.

Proficient in behaviour management, crisis intervention and problem solving.

Ability to train staff and mentor entry level instructors.

Experience in maintaining a positive staff team and environment.

Well practiced in communicating effectively with a high level of professionalism.

Ability to establish effective rapport with staff and students.

Ability to be a significant contributor to several small teams.

Comfort in working with youth from various backgrounds.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Wilderness First Responder

Bronze Cross or NLS

CPR-C

F-Class (or equivalent) Driver’s License

Post Secondary education in outdoor education, adventure therapy, or relevant field.

Whitewater Rescue Technician (an asset)

Moving Water Paddling Certification (an asset)

Position requires police background check including Vulnerable Sector Check

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Per diem rate range $140 – $175
