A 75-year-old man was killed in a Brooklyn car accident after a two-car crash. According to a CBS New York report, the man was struck while crossing Seventh Avenue near 56th Street in the Sunset Park neighborhood. Investigators say a Toyota Camry traveling with the green light slowed down to let the pedestrian cross the street. At the time, officials say, an SUV rear-ended the Camry, causing the car to hit the pedestrian. Emergency workers transported the injured pedestrian to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Both drivers remained at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Pedestrian Accidents in New York City

According to the New York City Department of Transportation, pedestrians are 10 times more likely to die than a motor vehicle occupant in the event of a crash. Between 2005 and 2009, pedestrians accounted for 52 percent of traffic fatalities in the city. In nearly 36 percent of crashes resulting in serious injury or fatality to pedestrians, driver inattention was cited as the primary cause.

Also, 27 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes involved the driver’s failure to yield. Pedestrian-vehicle crashes involving unsafe speeds are twice as deadly as other crashes. Manhattan has four times as many pedestrian killed or severely injured per mile of street compared to the other four boroughs. In addition, 43 percent of pedestrians killed in Manhattan lived in other boroughs or outside New York City.

Compensation for Victims and Families

Pedestrian accident victims can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc. The family of a deceased victim can seek damages by filing a wrongful death claim.
