Investigators say the actions of a Southwest Airlines pilot may have caused an airplane crash at La Guardia Airport, which injured 10 out of 149 passengers aboard. According to a news report in The Wall Street Journal, the incident occurred July 22. Investigators say seconds before the botched landing of the jet, the captain was concerned about touching down too far along the runway and may have throttled back the engines prematurely. The aircraft landed on its nose gear causing it to collapse.

The flight had taken off from Nashville, Tennessee. Investigators say that when the plane landed, the top of the landing gear, with only the right axle still attached, penetrated up through the floor of the bay, into an area holding electronic systems that help with operation and navigation of the aircraft. So far, investigators have not found any other problems or malfunctions with the aircraft to account for the pilot’s maneuver. Although the captain involved in this incident had a lot of experience, she had only once before landed at La Guardia.

Most Common Causes of Aviation Accidents

There are several reasons why airplane accidents may occur including:

• Pilot error

• Aircraft malfunction

• Poor or inadequate maintenance of the aircraft

• Defective manufacturing

• Faulty or defective part

• Poor decision making on the part of flight crew

Liability Issues

Airline companies owe their passengers the highest duty of care – just like all other public and private carriers. When a passenger is injured as the result of an aviation accident, they can seek compensation for his or her losses by filing a personal injury claim. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, cost of hospitalization, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Of course aviation accidents also result in fatalities. When this occurs, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for damages as well.
