TOBACCO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Police say a state trooper fatally shot a 50-year-old man who fired at officers who had surrounded a home in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.

The Gladwin County sheriff’s department says deputies were sent to Tobacco Township on Thursday morning following reports of a man who was yelling and firing shots. They approached him and the department says he fired at a marked patrol car.

He continued to shoot and a state police team was called to the home, about 125 miles northwest of Detroit. Police say he went inside and then emerged to fire again at officers. State police Special 1st Lt. David Kaiser tells The Bay City Times a trooper fatally shot the man, identified as Mark R. Gary.

No other injuries were reported. The trooper is on leave.
