HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A fire sparked in a garage and then spread to a home in Holland Sunday morning, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

It happened on Bay Avenue at around 9:30 a.m., according to the Holland Department of Public Safety. Fire crews were on the scene within six minutes and found smoke and flames coming from the garage.

The first thing they did was stop the spread of the fire into the house. They had it under control in about 10 minutes.

One of the people who lived in the house sustained a minor burn, but did not seek treatment.

The cause of the fire appears to have been accidental, but fire investigators are looking into the exact cause.

The garage and a vehicle parked inside were a total loss to the tune of about $50,000. The house sustained some minor fire damage and smoke damage throughout.

The Park Township Fire Department also assisted on the scene.

Holland DPS reminds residents to clear away snow from around fire hydrants. In the case of Sunday morning’s fire, technology in a fire truck told firefighters about where a hydrant should be, it still took some time to find the hydrant and clear it. Firefighters say that slowed their response.
