Catfish & The Bottlemen – The Ride

Catfish & the Bottlemen return with their follow-up album, delivering a solid collection of tunes that hit the mark and dispel any myths about second album syndrome.

Brimming with standout songs including the catchy “Soundcheck” and opener “7”, along with closing track “Outside”, it delivers everything fans of the band will have hoped for.

The Ride is out now on CD and digital download.

Paul Simon – Stranger To Stranger

For his latest album, Paul Simon takes us down familiar streets with a canon of songs that echo ballads from his Simon & Garfunkel days married with moments from his best efforts on Graceland.

Stranger to Stranger is Simon’s most introspective release in decades and doesn’t feel out of place in the modern whirlwind of today’s music.

The Heart Speaks In Whispers – Corinne Bailey Rae

I’ve always been a big fan of Bailey Rae but the one thing that has often disappointed me is the paucity of her releases. Six years since her last major album means her fans may feel a little cheated.

However, the good news is that it has been worth the wait and The Heart Speaks In Whispers is a mellow, introspective album that touches on familiar themes of love and life but in an often-unfamiliar fashion.

It’s a great album and a worthy return for one of music’s truly outstanding voices.

The Revenant (15)

In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.

Unless you’ve been out of earth orbit for the last few months you’ll know The Revenant was the film that finally delivered DiCaprio that long overdue Oscar and whilst this role is certainly not “Leo’s” best, you can’t argue that he deserves it. That and the fact this movie is a belter make it an essential purchase.

The Revenant is out now on Blu Ray, DVD and digital download.

Spotlight (15)

Spotlight tells the riveting true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that would rock the city and cause a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions.

When the newspaper’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters delve into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston's religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world.

Spotlight is a return to the great thrillers of the 70s and its strength lies in the great ensemble cast that support a wonderful screenplay. If you want an intelligent film that is layered and worthy of a second viewing then they don’t come any better...

Spotlight is out now on Blu Ray, DVD and digital download.

Creed

Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa. Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks down Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and asks him to be his trainer.

So here it is – another Rocky movie, albeit one that (thankfully) doesn’t force us to see Stallone chest bare and in his shorts – with the emphasis squarely on the illegitimate son of his fallen friend Apollo Creed.

Sure it’s clichéd and in truth this is just a re-run of Rocky but as an introduction to an entertaining series of films for the millennials it does just fine!

Creed is out now on Blu Ray, DVD and digital download.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Set 3 years after the events of Uncharted 3, Nathan Drake has apparently left the world of fortune hunting behind. However, it doesn’t take long for adventure to come calling when Drake’s brother, Sam, re-emerges asking for his help to save his own life and offering an adventure Drake cannot resist.

Nathan’s first original foray onto PS4 is everything fans of the series could have hoped for. Gorgeous graphics, engaging gameplay and a story that is worthy of the eye candy, it may just be the defining release of this console generation and worth every minute you invest in it. And be assured there will be many...

This game is a masterpiece of programming and demonstrates the worlds of gaming and cinema intertwined like never before.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is out now exclusively on PS4.

Doom

The iconic game from past systems is back and despite certain reservations this is a game that delivers on its promise to bring something different to the franchise.

Taking full advantage of the next generation hardware, the first thing to say is that Doom on either console is a fabulous experience both graphically and audibly.

To get the best out of this title, test yourself a little and stay away from the easy difficulties. Throw yourself in at the deep end and whilst you might be cursing at the screen a little more, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

Doom is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

HomeFront: The Revolution

HomeFront: The Revolution casts players into a near future dystopia that has seen a series of frankly implausible events lead to the Korean People’s Army bringing the US to its knees and occupy the country.

If you can see past this nonsense there is a good game to be found in here as you fight to free America (or specifically Philadelphia) from the iron grip of the evil opressors.

Whatever version you have, the graphics are good - although never exceptional – and the gameplay robust. It has a decent multiplayer option but this doesn’t prevent you from completing the game alone, although you do need to be constantly online to engage.

HomeFront: The Revolution is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Dead Island Retro Revenge: A brand new stand-alone 16-bit game set in the style of a classic side-scrolling action/endless runner within the Dead Island universe.

Smash heads, crack skulls and slice em up with visceral melee combat and true story-based 4-player co-op in a sprawling open world just waiting for exploration. Enhance and develop your unique character using RPG-like elements including an XP/leveling system and unlockable skill trees. Collect and customize thousands of weapons ranging from simple wooden bats and fire axes to heavy rifles as you search for the makings of the ultimate zombie-slaying tool.

Anyone familiar with Dying Light will immediately see the similarities and whilst this set of games isn’t quite on a par with Techland’s classic, the package nevertheless offers up an entertaining game and is a strong improvement on the originals.
