The Stephens County Indian and Lady Indian basketball teams both dropped region semi-final games on Thursday in the Region 8-AAAA tournament at Johnson High School. In the girls’ game, the Lady Indians fell to the Lady Red Raiders of Madison County 51-37 in their semi-final. Stephens County only trailed by two points at the half, but let the lead grow to 10 by the end of the third quarter as Madison County finished strong. Leading the Lady Indians in scoring was Keocia Walker with 12 points, while Charity Major and Audresha Merritt each added six points. Madison County was led in scoring by Nakeia Brown with 17 points and Elize Coberly with 16 points. In the nightcap, the Indian boys lost to top-seeded Johnson 92-62. Fred Smith led Stephens County with 16 points. Cody Helgeland had 14 points and Tay Walker added nine points. Carter Cagle led all scorers with 23 points, while Ty Cockfield scored 19 points and James Hodges added 18 points. Both teams return to action this afternoon as they play in the third place games.
