ANNIVERSARIES

2008-Van Morrison begins a two-night stand performs his legendary Astral Weeks in its entirety at the Hollywood Bowl in L-A. The shows, which feature the musicians who recorded the L-P with Van in 1968, are taped for future release on C-D and D-V-D.

2007-Although sold only at Wal-Mart and its Sam’s Club subsidiary, The Eagles’ Long Road Out of Eden debuts at number-one on the Billboard album chart. In order for that to happen, Billboard had to change its policy to allow albums released exclusively through one retailer to chart.

2007-The Eagles perform their new single, “How Long,” on the nationally televised Country Music Association Awards show.

2006-Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan debuts four new songs during an L-A show with The Who’s Pete Townshend.

2002-The opening date of Guns n’ Roses’ North American tour in Vancouver, Canada turns into a riot when the show is canceled at the last minute.

1991-It is announced that Frank Zappa has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

1988-John Fogerty is found not guilty of plagiarizing himself. Fantasy Records, which owns the rights to his Creedence Clearwater Revival catalog, had sued him, claiming that “The Old Man Down the Road” was a re-write of “Run Through the Jungle.”

1983-The Rolling Stones release Undercover.

1980-Chicago performs on A-B-C’s late night comedy series Fridays.

1971-The Beach Boys perform at Georgetown University in Washington D-C. “Good Vibrations” leads off the show. “Surfin’ U-S-A” is the 12th and last song before intermission. “Cool Cool Water” leads off the second half, and “Fun Fun Fun” wraps it up.

1968-The Doors are banned from playing Phoenix after Jim Morrison encourages the crowd to stand up during their show there.

1964-“Dance, Dance, Dance” becomes the last of seven Beach Boys singles to chart during 1964.

KISS/ex-Black ‘n Blue guitarist.  Born in 1960.

Joni Mitchell (Roberta Joan Anderson)-71 years old

The Canadian singer-songwriter-painter charted with “Help Me” and “Free Man in Paris” while giving “Both Sides Now” to Judy Collins and “Woodstock” — which she wrote in a New York City apartment while sitting out the festival — to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. She’s a 1997 inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Born in 1943.

Born in New York but raised in Louisiana, the singer-guitarist broke through with live recordings from L.A.’s Whisky a Go-Go. “Memphis” became his first hit  (and got him the nickname “King of the Remakes”). “Mountain of Love,” “Baby I Need Your Lovin’,” “Tracks of My Tears” and “The Midnight Special” followed the same blueprint. However, he had hits with the TV theme “Secret Agent Man” and the self-penned “Poor Side of Town.” Along with John Phillips, Lou Adler and others, he organized the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. He also founded Soul City Records and signed The Fifth Dimension.  Born in 1942.
