BUXTON, N.C. (AP) — Ceremonies are scheduled on the Outer Banks to remember foreign sailors who died off the North Carolina coast during World War II.
The ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Buxton at the cemetery located near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and at 11 a.m. Friday at the British Cemetery on Ocracoke.
The Buxton ceremony honors those who died in April 1942 when the British armed tanker San Delfino was sunk by U-203 off Pea Island. Two men are buried in the cemetery.
The Ocracoke ceremony honors sailors from the HMS Bedfordshire that was destroyed in May 1942 by German submarine U-558 near the island. Four men are buried there.
Several groups organize the ceremonies, including the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the Ocracoke community.
