A winter storm that is expected to dump up to a foot of snow on parts of the tri-state area, and as much as 4 inches in New York City, began with flurries Saturday morning.
Light snow will continue to fall throughout the morning before becoming heavier in the afternoon, particularly after 4 p.m., and eventually changing into sleet and rain.
By midday Saturday between 2 and 2 1/1 inches had fallen in Westchester, between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 inches had accumulated in Fairfield Country and 1.6 inches were recorded in the Bronx's Bedford Park.
Accumulations will vary through the region, with up to 2 inches expected on the Jersey Shore and the south shore of Long Island; between 2 and 4 inches in New York City, the north shore of Long Island and central New Jersey; between 4 and 8 inches in Westchester, Fairfield, Rockland and Morris counties, as well as northeast New Jersey; and between 8 inches and a foot forecast to fall in the Hudson Valley and northwest New Jersey.
The snow is expected to change to rain and sleet at around 5 p.m. on the Jersey Shore; 7 p.m. on Long Island; 10 p.m. in New York City; and 1 a.m. in Westchester and Northern New Jersey.
The rain could wash away much of the snow in some areas by morning.
Travel advisories are in effect for much of the area, and airports are telling customers to check with their carriers before flying today.
As of early afternoon John F. Kennedy International airport was reporting that arriving flights were delayed an average of an hour and 4 minutes, according to the FAA, which was also urging travelers to check for delays at area airports.
Alternate-side parking and subway track work is suspended in New York City.
The storm will move out Sunday morning and temperatures will rise into the low 40s.
