5am – A/B/C Hillary’s Emails Update

5am – D/E     Trump immigration proposal divides GOP presidential field. Donald Trump’s Deportation Plan Would Cost $100-200 Billion. Now that Donald Trump has called to deport all of the undocumented immigrants living in the United States, here’s the natural follow-up question: How much would that cost? The answer: More than $100 billion — if not $200 billion. Back in 2011, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deputy director Kumar Kibble said it costs $12,500 to deport an individual undocumented immigrant. So when you multiply that cost for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S., that comes to $137.5 billion. Another estimate from the liberal-leaning Center for American Progress — from back in 2010 — put the overall price tag at $200 billion. That estimate included the cost to arrest, detain, process and transport the undocumented population over a five-year period.

Scott Walker: The US should ‘absolutely’ stop granting birthright citizenship. DES MOINES — GOP presidential hopeful Scott Walker said Monday that children of illegal immigrants who are born in the United States should not automatically receive U.S. citizenship. Walker’s comments came as he walked through the Iowa State Fair with a swarm of reporters who fired questions at him. A number of the questions focused on immigration, given a controversial immigration plan that GOP frontrunner Donald Trump released over the weekend. That included this question from Kasie Hunt of MSNBC: “Do you think that birthright citizenship should be ended?” Walker, who is governor of Wisconsin, had been repeatedly asked that question earlier in the day, but this time he responded: “Well, like I said, Harry Reid said it’s not right for this country. I think that’s something we should — yeah, absolutely, going forward.” In the early 1990s, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) introduced legislation that would have clarified the 14th Amendment of the Constitution and revoked birthright citizenship, a position that the Senate Democratic leader has since abandoned.

6am – A/B/C Starbucks & Panera announced Pumpkin Spice Lattes will be made with REAL pumpkin. Exciting news if you’re trying to avoid artificial flavoring but are as obsessed as we are with pumpkin spice lattes: Both Starbucks and Panera announced today that their PSLs will be made with REAL pumpkin this season. “After hearing from customers and partners about ingredients, we took another look at this beverage and why we created it so many years ago,” Peter Dukes, Starbucks’ espresso brand manager, wrote on the company’s blog. “It was simple—espresso, perfectly steamed milk, [and] warm fall spices with delicious flavor of pumpkin pie that reminds you of the cool, crisp days of autumn. So with that great taste you know and love, the PSL returns this fall, and this time it will be made with real pumpkin and without caramel coloring.” Panera Bread visited our office last week to share the details on its own pumpkin spice latte. “Our pumpkin offerings have long included real pumpkin—and this year our pumpkin spice latte takes real a step further,” says Dan Kish, Panera’s head chef.

6am – D         INTERVIEW – GORDON CHANG – Foreign policy analyst and author of “The Nuclear Showdown” and “The Coming Collapse of China”

TOPICS: China news:

China‘s currency devaluation could put as many as 640,000 US jobs at risk. (Business Insider / Aug. 17, 2015) China’s decision to devalue its currency last week means that it has chosen to export its unemployment problem, rather than take the hard steps needed to restructure its domestic economy. Over the past decade, trade deficits caused by currency manipulation by about 20 mostly Asian countries, predominantly China, has eliminated between 2.3 million and 5.8 million U.S. jobs. The yuan fell 4.4 percent in the first three days after China announced its devaluation, and a cumulative drop of 10 to 15 percent is possible over the next two weeks, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. A devaluation of the yuan of between 4.4 to 15 percent, if it persists, would likely increase U.S. trade deficits sufficiently to eliminate between 190,000 and 640,000 U.S. jobs.

Obama Administration Warns Beijing About Covert Agents Operating in US. (NY Times) — WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has delivered a warning to Beijing about the presence of Chinese government agents operating secretly in the United States to pressure prominent expatriates — some wanted in China on charges of corruption — to return home immediately, according to American officials. The American officials said that Chinese law enforcement agents covertly in this country are part of Beijing’s global campaign to hunt down and repatriate Chinese fugitives and, in some cases, recover allegedly ill-gotten gains. The Chinese government has officially named the effort Operation Fox Hunt.

Angry protesters demand answers after China blast. (Al Jazeera) — Protests have erupted in the Chinese city of Tianjin, as family members of the missing and those made homeless demanded answers from the government following last week’s deadly explosions at an industrial site. An estimated 400 people gathered for “spontaneous protests” in the port city on Monday, a rare occurrence in the communist state. The death toll from the explosions has now risen to 114, with dozens still missing. Sodium cyanide leak feared after China explosion. Al Jazeera’s Adrian Brown, reporting from Tianjin, said that dozens of soldiers looked on as the protesters gathered, making no attempt to stop them, nor the local journalists covering the event. “China’s government is normally uneasy about even small, spontaneous protests. It’s very rare for authorities to allow this to happen,” he said. Our correspondent also said that protesters have been careful to hold aloft other banners “proclaiming their support” for the communist party.

A Global Recession May Be Brewing in China. (WSJ) – — Beijing’s desperate attempts to hit its arbitrary 7% growth target are having world-wide repercussions. The global economy enters the seventh year of a sluggish recovery, it’s time to start asking when the world will face its next downturn—and what will drive it. Over the past 50 years there has been a global recession once every eight years, on average, so the next one may be brewing. When exactly it will come is hard to call. But the policy panic in Beijing over its currency and the fall of its stock market suggest that the next global recession likely will be “made in China.” This would represent a major break from the past. Historically, the U.S. has been the single largest contributor to global growth, and a contraction in the American economy has been the catalyst that tipped the world into recession.

6am – E         Way into a woman’s heart also through her stomach. (CNN) If you really want to get lucky in love, forget about taking her to a movie or a bar; you may be better off taking her out for dinner first. That’s what new research — the first of its kind — suggests from scientists who worked with Drexel University. The study recently ran in the journal Appetite. This pilot study of a small number of normal-sized, college-age women found that their brains responded better to romantic cues if they’d eaten first. The scientists discovered this by accident, according to senior author Michael Lowe, a professor in Drexel’s department of psychology. They had been studying women to see if habitual dieters or women who ate normally responded differently to photos of tempting foods such as chocolate cake. To contrast with those images, the 20 women were also shown photos of romance. The pictures showed couples who held hands and walked along the beach, or couples who were having a candlelit dinner or were snuggling. Using an MRI, the scientists found the women who were fed before the test had a much more dramatic response to the romance photos than the women who fasted.

7am – A         INTERVIEW – VA DEL TIM HUGO — representing the 40th district, which includes the municipalities of Catharpin, Clifton, and Fairfax Station and is the Majority Caucus Chairman for the Virginia House Republican Caucus

Virginia legislature returned to Richmond on Monday

Va. Senate rejects GOP pick for state Supreme Court. (Richmond Times Dispatch) – Senate Democrats, responding to the refusal of Republican legislators to elect Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s recess appointment to the Supreme Court of Virginia, blocked the GOP’s choice to replace her Monday, further widening the partisan rift between the two parties controlling the executive and legislative branches.

Virginia lawmakers at a standstill over redistricting. While public hearings had been scheduled by the House as they worked on a new map, the Senate adjourned, essentially ending the redistricting process for now. Lawmakers have until September 1 to come up with new congressional lines. If lawmakers and the governor cannot come to a compromise, federal judges could impose their own boundaries as they have done in other states.

7am – B        Md. man known for Batman charity work killed in weekend crash. WASHINGTON — Leonard Robinson led an extraordinary life. A successful businessman, he chose to dedicate his time to bringing joy to sick children. He donned his Batman costume, hopped into his customized Lamborghini Batmobile and let the smiles roll at area hospitals. But Sunday night, the superhero’s mission ended along the side of Interstate 70 in Western Maryland. State police say that Robinson, better known as Lenny, was outside the Batmobile working on the car’s engine when he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle. Police say the custom vehicle was partially parked in the fast lane at the time. Robinson, who was not wearing his costume, died at the scene near Big Pool. He was 51. Funeral services are set for noon Wednesday at Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills.

U.S. Traffic Deaths, Injuries and Related Costs Up in 2015, (Newsweek) – The United States is on track to have its deadliest traffic year since 2007, the National Safety Council says, with nearly 19,000 people killed as a result of motor vehicle accidents between January and June—a 14 percent increase over the same period last year. The number of injuries and the costs associated with traffic accidents also rose significantly, according to estimates from NSC’s statistics department released Monday. Nearly 2.3 million “serious injuries,” which the NSC defines as those requiring medical consultation, were sustained during the six-month period, up 30 percent when compared with the first half of 2014. In a similar upward trend, the estimated costs of these crashes—including medical expenses, wage and productivity losses and property damage—increased 24 percent, to roughly $152 billion.

7am – C SNL News:

Tracy Morgan to Return to ‘SNL,’ Miley Cyrus & Amy Schumer Set to Host. Tracy Morgan will make his triumphant return to “Saturday Night Live,” set as a host when the 41st season returns. Miley Cyrus and Amy Schumer have also been tapped to emcee “SNL” this fall. Morgan, a former “SNL” cast member for seven seasons, will host the show for his second time on Oct. 17. Morgan’s return to Studio 8H follows a 2014 car crash that left him in critical condition. The comedian is a Rockefeller Center staple, having also starred in NBC’s “30 Rock.” Cyrus will kick off the new episodes, as the first host for season 41 on Oct. 3, which will mark the singer’s third time emceeing “SNL.” Cyrus also has hosting duties coming up this month with the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 30.

KFC just made Norm Mcdonald their new Colonel Sanders. Norm Macdonald Replaces Darrell Hammond for KFC’s Colonel Sanders Ads. KFC has another new Colonel Sanders: Norm MacDonald. (CNN) Three months after KFC reintroduced “Colonel Sanders,” they have a new actor portraying him. The late founder of the fast food chain had been played over the summer by “Saturday Night Live” announcer and former cast member Darrell Hammond. As of Sunday night, there was a new Colonel in town, portrayed by fellow “SNL” alum (and current “Last Comic Standing” judge) Norm MacDonald (no stranger to fast food ads, having been the voice of the Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr. “star” years ago).

7am – D/E     Carly Fiorina Praised Hillary Clinton Once, But Now The Republican’s Her Greatest Rival In Securing The Women Vote. Anyone who has read her latest letter to CNN would be hard pressed to believe that Carly Fiorina once praised Hillary Clinton and cited the Democrat as a champion for women. But it’s true: Back in 2008, while campaigning for Sen. John McCain, Fiorina was extremely effusive in her praise of Clinton. Though some have insinuated no such statements were ever made, recent audio discovered by BuzzFeed seems very much at odds with the comments we’re used to hearing Fiorina make about Clinton and her campaign. The speech that BuzzFeed uncovered was recorded in 2008, when Fiorina was a campaign surrogate for John McCain, and was attempting to court Clinton supporters for McCain’s campaign.

Preview Restaurant Week: DC-area restaurants gearing up for Restaurant Week.       By Associated Press WASHINGTON — Restaurants in and around Washington are gearing up to offer special meal deals for Restaurant Week. Monday is the start of Metropolitan Washington Restaurant Week, where multi-course meals at participating restaurants cost $22 for lunch and $35 for dinner. More than 200 area restaurants are offering special meal deals through Aug. 23. Online: http://www.restaurantweekmetrodc.org/

Restaurant Robots: Minimum Wage Increase In Washington, D.C. Could Lead To Automated Workers. Restaurants may opt to automate more of their workforce if minimum wages increase across the nation. A new ballot for a wage increase in Washington, D.C. could expedite the rise of an automated workforce for resturaunts like McDonald’s. A ballot initiative to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour is gaining steam in the District, and workers across the nation are taking a stand for more fair wages, according to the Washington Post. Thirty percent of restaurant costs go toward employee salaries, so if the minimum wage rises, the cost effectiveness of robot workers becomes that much more enticing.

8am – B/C     RG III: Feel like best QB in NFL, now ‘have to go out and show that’ Robert Griffin III: ‘I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the NFL’ You know it’s the offseason when we’re having a discussion about whether or not a particular NFL quarterback is ranked as the “X” best guy in the league. But this one is just silly. Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III believes he’s the best quarterback in the NFL. Or something close to it. “I don’t feel like I have to come out here and show anybody anything or why I’m better than this guy or better than that guy. It’s more about going out and affirming that for me, I go out and I play, I know I’m the best quarterback on this team,” Griffin told WJLA in an interview. “I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the league and I have to go out and show that.”

Redskins president dismisses name change for new stadium. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Washington Redskins President Bruce Allen made clear Monday the team would not reconsider whether to change the team’s nickname if it became a political barrier to building a new stadium in the nation’s capital or elsewhere. The club currently plays at FedEx Field — which opened in Landover, Maryland, in 1997 — and has started exploring sites for a new facility, even though its lease there runs until 2026.At a news conference before Washington’s last practice of training camp Monday, Allen said the Redskins have spoken with representatives of Washington, Virginia and Maryland about a spot for a stadium.

Ex-Washington tight end Chris Cooley says he will come out of retirement. Former Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley will return to the NFL this season after two years away from the game, he said on his radio show Monday. Cooley added that he may not necessarily return to Washington. Cooley, 33, has not played since 2012 but has expressed interest recently in a comeback. He told The Washington Post in July that he had been working out and bulking up to his NFL playing weight of 250 pounds. He also told CSNWashington.com last week that he would like to return to the franchise with which he played nine seasons.

8am – E         Harrison Ford meet Johnny Depp (in full Jack Sparrow costume) at Disney’s D23 Expo. What happened when Harrison Ford, the incredibly blunt star of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, met Johnny Depp dressed in full Jack Sparrow regalia? They gave us one of the best photos from the 2015 D23 Expo. Depp hit up the convention as the rum-loving captain to promote Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but the real highlight came when he bumped into Ford offstage. The actor behind Han Solo looked somewhat perplexed staring into the eyes of Depp, who draped his arms delicately over Ford’s shoulders. Ford was at Disney’s D23 to promote Star Wars: The Force Awakens with his director J.J. Abrams and fellow castmates John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and Lupita Nyong’o. Together they revealed the new poster for the film, which is set for release on Dec. 18.
