Local Notes:
Lady Raider Rumble Results… Let’s check on the results from the 2nd Annual Lady Raider Rumble that started yesterday at LDHS where both Clinton and Laurens played a pair of games…
CHS:
BHP 47 – Clinton 32… In the first game of the tournament, the Lady Red Devils took on the always strong Lady Bears of BHP… In the first quarter the Red Devils played solid defense and got their share of rebounds and led 7-6 at the end of the quarter… However the Bears picked up their offense in the second quarter and out-rebounded the Red Devils and led 24-16 at the half… BHP continued to pull away in the second half and wound up winning the game 47-32… The Lady Devils fought to the end but just could not climb out of the hole… The Bears’ Shanteal Green led all scorers with 21 points… Ashlyn Abercrombie was the only Red Devil in double digits with 14… Other scoring for Clinton were Savannah Campbell with 9, Terriana Bennett 6 and MK Kelly 3.
York 40 – Clinton 21… Later yesterday afternoon the Lady Red Devils faced off against the Lady Cougars of York HS… Savannah Campbell scored the first 3 points of the game for Clinton on their opening possession and they held that lead for only about 2 minutes before York went up 4-3 and then rattled off 7 more unanswered points and never trailed again… York led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 25-11 at the half and continued to pull away for a 47-21 win… Clinton had trouble with the turnover bug throughout the game and York’s height did not allow them many second chances while they had several… The leading scorer in the game was York’s Natalee Graham… Clinton was led by Savannah Campbell who scored 11 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were Terriana Bennett with 4 while both Alexis Pagano and MK Kelly had 3 points each… The Red Devils are scheduled to face the Lady Bear Cats of Brookland-Cayce today at 6:30 or perhaps a few minutes earlier.
LDHS
Laurens vs. Ware Shoals… The Lady Raiders were scheduled to take on the Lady Hornets of Ware Shoals in their first game of the day buy transportation issues and district policy about using non-district owned transportation prevented them from making the tournament this year… They will forfeit all their scheduled games in tournament.
Union County 54 – Laurens 46… In the last game of the evening the Lady Raiders faced off against the Lady Yellow Jackets of Union County HS and fell to the Jackets by a score of 54-46… Union came out hot and the Raiders cold and the score was 12-0 before the Raiders finally got on the board to make it 12-2 with 2:35 left in the first quarter… The Yellow Jackets had an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and 28-18 at the half… Union led 39-30 going into the final quarter of play and the Raiders did not give up as they cut the Yellow Jackets lead to three points 49-46 with 2 minutes left to play but just could not get any closer… The Raiders’ defense caused more turnovers than the Raiders committed themselves but the problem was they had trouble turning them into points as they could not finish out the shots and missed over half of their free throw attempts… The Raiders were led by Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon who had a game high 19 points and was the only Raider in double-digits… Cali Heisey finished the night with 9 points, Qua Fortson 8, Tieisha Jones 4, Alexus Espinosa & Portland Wallace 2 each while both MK Moore and Jayla Mosley had a single point… The Raiders and the Mustangs of Palmetto are scheduled to play today at 7:45 or possibly a few minutes before.
