College Notes:

College of Charleston Wins Gainesville Regional… While Clemson and South Carolina did not make it out of their regionals, one state team did – the College of Charleston Cougars… The Cougars were the #4 seed in the Gainesville Regional and took on the home standing Gators of Florida on Friday night and defeated them 3-2… Then on Saturday night they defeated Long Beach State 6-3 to remain undefeated and advance to the region finals yesterday… Once again they face Long Beach State and defeated them 4-2 to punch their ticket to the Super Regional… Congratulations to the Cougars…I’ll have more about the super regionals later in the week.

College Softball… The women’s Division I Softball Championship series is a lot farther along than the baseball series… As a matter of fact they are down to just two teams the University of Florida and Alabama… They started their best of three series last night and #5 seed Florida took a 5-0 win over #2 seed Alabama.

Braves: The Braves were off last night and will start a short 2-game series with the Seattle Mariners tonight at Turner Field… By the way the Braves have a 31-25 season record to date and are in first place in the N.L. East with a 2½ game lead over the Marlins

Greenville Drive: Drive 7 – Legends 3… The Greenville Drive started a 3-game series with the Lexington Legends last night at Flour Field… The Drive started the series on a positive note as they took a 7-3 win… The Drive’s third baseman Jantzen Witte had a 2-run homer for the Drive… The teams will play again in Greenville tonight at 7:05.

(This is the second year in-a-row that Harriett has won this tournament.)… In the Men’s Division, Bill Craine (Laurens) came in first place ( 6-3, 6-1, 6-2) and Rhett Frazier (Newberry) was the runner-up (7-6(4), 6-1, 6-2)… All three of the above winners received prizes… (Matt Davis also won a prize for being the first participant to sign up for this tournament.)… All proceeds from this tournament will go towards our two upcoming CLNTA Summer Youth Camps (Newberry & Laurens)… Saturday’s event alone generated $560.00 in donations… The CLNTA would like to thank Mark Gardiner, Newberry College Tennis Coach, for again hosting the venue for this event… The CLNTA’s next tournament will be on Saturday, August 30th, at Laurens City Park.
