CHS:

Signing:  Yesterday CHS senior Keiron Murphy signed a letter of intent to continue his education at Limestone College in Gaffney and play football while there… If you check the Between the Lines on our homepage you will find a posting with a short video interview done with him after the signing.

 

Laurens Academy: The Crusaders were in second round action of the SCISA Region 2A basketball tournament at Newberry College last night.

Girls: Newberry Academy 36 – LA 21…  The Lady Crusaders took faced off against the Lady Patriots of Newberry Academy last in 2nd round action… The Lady patriots had defeated the lady Crusaders twice in the regular season and they say it is hard to beat a team 3 times in a row but the lady Patriots managed to do that as they took a 36-21 win ending the Lady Crusaders season…. The Lady Crusaders led up until just before halftime when Newberry scored to make it 18-16 Newberry at the half… The 3rd quarter is where Newberry forged further ahead and the Crusaders just could not catch up… Kayla Mitchell led the Lady Crusaders with 10 points… Taylor Williamson had 5, Savannah Mitchell 4 and Caroline Verdin 2… The Lady Crusaders end up 15-12 on the season.

Boys: LA 59 – Wardlaw 31… Now it was better news in the boys contest as the Crusaders took a 59-31 and will advance to the region championship game tonight…. Chase Brewington had 28 points and Matthew Urwick 18 to lead the Crusaders… The Region Championship game will be tonight at Glenn Forest in Columbia and they will face the tough Newberry Academy Patriots… The tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm… Good luck to the Crusaders!

 

 

College Baseball Notes: The College baseball season started off last weekend so let’s briefly review how some of the schools did

Clemson… The Tigers opened their season last Friday with a 5-6 loss in 10 innings to Eastern Michigan… However they rebounded on Sat. & Sun. taking 5-3 & 9-7 wins…  They will host a 3 game series with Maine starting this Friday.

South Carolina…  The Gamecocks opened their season with a 3 game sweep of Bucknell on Saturday & Sunday… The scores were 17-4, 12-2 and 12-0…

PC…  The Blue Hose opened their season on Sunday with a doubleheader as they hosted Savannah State..   PC swept the doubleheader taking the 2 wins by scores of 9-5 & 4-0

 

 Local Sports Schedule:

CHS:Both of the Red Devil basketball teams will be playing in 1st round State AAA Tournament action this Thursday night.

Girls…  The Lady Red Devils will travel down below Columbia to take on the Lady Diamond Hornets of Lower Richland High School… The game time will be announced later but most likely to be 7:00 pm.

Boys…  Meanwhile at 7:00 pm the boys will also be in the Columbia area as they take on the AC Flora Falcons.

TICKET NOTE… As per South Carolina High School League rules, all tickets will be $6.00 and only High School League issued passes will be accepted.

 LDHS:

Wrestling: On Friday and Saturday of this week Laurens District 55 High School will be hosting the Upper State Class AAAA Wrestling Tournament… Almost all of the Raider wrestlers have qualified for this tournament…I’ll have more information about that as the week goes on.

Laurens YMCA Registration for Spring Sports… The Laurens YMCA is registering youth for Tee Ball and Dixie Youth Baseball… Tee Ball & Dixie Youth is open to those ages 3-15 and registration closes March 17th… For more information about these call he Laurens YMCA at 984-2626 or go to the Y’s website www.laurensymca.org.

City of Laurens Parks & Recreation Little League Baseball & Softball… Registration is also underway for Little League Baseball & Softball through the Laurens City Parks & Recreation Department… There are age appropriate divisions for youth ages 3 -12…. Registration will close February 19thand can be done at the Little River Park office during their normal business hours… Call 681-7275 for more information or go to the following website: www.laurenslittleleague.com.

Clinton YMCA – City of Clinton Youth Baseball & Softball… Registration is now underway at the Clinton YMCA for youth baseball & softball… There are 7 different age groupings in baseball or girls’ softball for youth ages 3-15… The deadline to register without a $10 late fee is Feb. 18th…. Registration is at the Clinton YMCA during their normal business hours… For more information contact the YMCA at 833-1555…. By the way, they are looking for volunteer coaches also… Interested in that, contact Brian Shealy at the same number.
