GREECE, N.Y. (WIVB) – About 45 minutes after issuing an Amber Alert for a teenager near Rochester, Greece Town Police canceled the alert. Now 16-year-old Cassidy N. Geffert is facing charges.
The Amber Alert notice said Geffert left a note at her home on Talnuck Drive for her parents around 10 a.m. Monday indicating she was in danger. The original Amber Alert by police noted that the note had blood on it and the victim’s cell phone number. Later, Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan said there was no blood on the note.
Chief Phelan also pointed out other corrections in the original information. He says a .38 caliber handgun may have been taken from the home but that was unclear. He also said that this never was a ‘confirmed abduction’ the way it was reported on the Amber Alert. NY State Police in Albany put out the actual alert, but it’s unclear what caused the erroneous information.
A vehicle was taken from the scene, possibly headed to Ohio. It was described as a black four-door Saab, with a New York license plate number GMM9136.
The Amber Alert was issued around 2:15 p.m., but by 3 p.m., it had been canceled. Geffert was found in Brockport.
Greece Police Sgt. Jared Rene said, “A concerned citizen called 911 in the Brockport area. They had spotted the vehicle mentioned in the Amber Alert and the female was then located with the vehicle, alone, unharmed, and at this point our agency can confirm that she was not abducted.”
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle now reports Geffert has been arrested and police say it is “directly related to her involvement in today’s incident at her home.” She has been charged with grand larceny, according to the newspaper.
