Fountain City, WI- As Severson Oil Company continued their support of local dirt track racing at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, Brad
Waits continued his winning ways at the banked, black-clay 1/3-mile oval in Fountain City, WI.
After leading 2012 Track Champion Lucas Schott to the checkered flag in the evening’s second, of three, heat races, Waits started outside front row for the “Severson Oil 25″ Feature and put on a display of dominance not seen in a while. Pole sitter Paul Harelstad jumped from the pole position of the 17 car field to lead the first lap, but after that it was all Waits, as the Rochester, MN racer took the lead on lap 2 and never once relinquished the position. Stretching out a lead that took him through lapped traffic all the
way into the top-10 and put almost a half lap between his flat-black NFG sponsored #24 and the second place finisher of Schott, Waits three-wheeled through the ultra-low groove with bite, traction and speed that was unmatched by all.
As a matter of fact, the only real action Waits saw around other cars was as he was picking his way through lapped traffic, “We all like the low groove,” smiled Waits in Victory Lane, after being asked about the pack, “but we got this back up car out and it was really strong!”
Schott finished a distant second with first heat race winner, and defending Track Champion, Josh Angst completing the top three positions.
BLEESS BEST OF THE B-MOD BATTLE
The Black Horse Bar Grill USRA B-Mod Feature was a treat for the fans in the packed grandstands. After four heat races which produced high speeds and first time winners, the evening’s 26-car 18-lap main event was an action packed affair which had no fewer than seven drivers battling for and swapping the lead out front of the pack!
The first 12 laps were led by Bob Fort with his #97 while a pack of eight battled and snarled behind him in an effort to get to him and challenge for the lead. On lap 13 the #21 of defending Track Champion Jacob Bleess lead the field for the first time, but he was not alone. Alex Williamson, first heat race winner Tyler Creeley, and two-time and defending feature winner Jon Van Minsel were mixed up in the pack at the front of the field, and chomping at the bit for a chance to lead.
On Lap 14 Williamson worked past Bleess to lead a lap; as Bleess and Williamson battled amongst themselves to see who could use the lowest groove to their advantage, Van Minsel, the evening’s Wing Dam Saloon Grill Driver Of The Week, ran the extreme opposite line, circling the high-banked 1/3-mile oval in the outermost extreme high line that the track had to offer!
As the battle for the lead, and eventual win, raged on, a late race caution slowed the field and packed them up for a classic ‘shoot out’ to the finish . . . and many, if not all, of the fans in the stands were surprised to see Bleess leave the low line open on the restart. Williamson saw the opportunity and seized it but couldn’t quite pull past Bleess for the lead, which Bleess held for the feature win.
“It was a real fun race,” Bleess said in Victory Lane. “I just battled and found my way up front. I did well on my restarts and stayed on the bottom (groove).”
Van Minsel followed Williamson to the checkered flag in third.
WERNER WINS INAGURAL LIQUID NITRO 600 MOD TOURING SERIES EVENT
The 600 Mod division has been steadily growing since being introduced to the Midwest via MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY four year ago. For 2014 the growth caught the attention of national energy drink LIQUID NITRO ENERGY DRINK, who have come on board for the 2014 season to create The Liquid Nitro 600 Mod Touring Series which is a 16 race touring series which will visit different tracks throughout the Upper Midwest Battling for larger race night purses and a lucrative payout at the end of the season based upon final point standings.
On this first visit to MTS, a huge pack of 27 comprised of drivers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois showed up to battle for the money and the win. Through four heats, the speeds were high and the battles were plenty. As the field rolled onto the track the energy in the air was almost palpable; apparently, the energy and excitement was noticed by the drivers as well, as they amped up their own efforts . . . but, just a bit too much. The 20 lap feature was marred by numerous cautions comprised of single and multiple car spins.
The feature wore on minute after minute and when finally the checkered flag waived, defending MTS Track Champion Don Werner held off second heat race winner Bob Cisewski for the win, followed by third heat race winner Curt Luhmann.
Hoisting the over-sized winner’s check over his head in Victory Lane Werner commented on the growth of this style of racing, “To see all these drivers at the track is great. The guys who race here regularly and the drivers from the south of us who are joining in makes this series very exciting, competitive and fun for us drivers and the fans as well!”
BRAUER WINS SUPER FEATURE
Over the final 14 laps of the 20-lap Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock feature at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, Eyota, MN’s Jeff Brauer first moved from fourth to third, then second and eventually to first with only three laps remaining to win the evening’s main event!
Working past two-time and defending Track Champion Tommy Richards and former WISSOTA National Champion Tim Johnson, Brauer used the final three laps to his advantage to collect the win. “This division is so fast”, commented Brauer in Victory Lane, “Guys like Johnson, Richards, Jason Forehand are always fast, and how about Brian Fetting leading all those laps.” Fetting jumped out front on lap four after working past early race leader Cody Gardner, and lead the next 12 laps before Richards overtook him for the lead.
Richards eventually settled for second just .094 of a second behind Brauer as the two crossed beneath the waiving checkered flag side by side! Johnson completed the top 3 at the line.
JOHNSON WINS SECOND STREET STOCK FEATURE
While Brainerd, MN’s Tim Johnson came up two positions shy of a Super Stock feature win, he collected his second Street Stock feature win of the year at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. Johnson made it a clean sweep on the night winning both his heat race as well as the evening’s feature; the feature win coming from a last lap pass for the lead.
As the white flag flew, Johnson was battling Danny Richard’s for the top spot; entering the third turn, Johnson moved to the inside of Richards’ #3R. The two battled side by side through the fourth and final turn with Johnson powered towards the waiving checkered flag and the feature win.
Shaun Mann beat visiting driver Mike Blowers to the line for third.
BOBBY FORT, JR., ZACH BROM BRADEN BRAUER ALSO COLLECT CHECKERED FLAGS
Bobby Fort, Jr. worked past Lee Hager’s #94 to win the evening’s Elmer’s Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock feature, “Car was fast racing Lee for the win was fun”, commented the second generation driver from the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Victory Lane.
Zach Brom outlasted the competition to win the Sunshine Sanitation A Mini-Mod feature, on a night that saw not one but two roll overs on the 1/10-mile Lightning Speedway which sits within the infield of the much larger MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. “I could see that Jett’s car was slowing a little bit, and I knew that I could catch him”, smiled Brom in Victory lane after being asked about his pass for the lead and eventual feature win. JT Wasmund finished second with Devin Williamson crossing the line third.
Braden Brauer bested a nice 11-car field to win the Sunshine Sanitation B Mini-Mod feature on The Lightning Speedway. Brauer was followed across the line by Triton Krause and Brady Boland in third.
Racing resumes next Friday night May 30th with KAGE / BUD Night presented by Winona Radio’s KAGE Radio and Budweiser at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY.
