Ashland, WI — Mother Nature has a nasty habit of being cruel to Northland race tracks in the Spring, and this year she has held particularly true to form. The staff of the ABC Raceway begrudgingly made the decision earlier this week to postpone its 2014 season opener one week, until Saturday, May 24.
“Just like everyone else, we received a lot of snow this past Winter,” stated Raceway president Kurt Beeksma after the decision was agreed to on Monday. “Now with the thawing, it’s just been too wet and cold to get any work done (on the facility grounds).” Track workers are hoping for a little more favorable weather in the forecast so that efforts can begin in earnest to prepare the facility for what is slated to be a very eventful summer, as the Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association will celebrate its 50th season of hosting stock car racing events in the Chequamegon Bay area.
In the meantime, the track’s car show and swap meet is still on for Saturday, May 10, at FastLane Motorsports Custom Powdercoating on East Highway 2 in Ashland. The traditional season kick-off will be held from 10 am-2 pm and will feature a picnic lunch and a chance to meet several local race drivers and view stock cars on display. Area classic car and hot rod owners are welcome to park their prized possessions in FastLane’s front parking area and enjoy the festivities during the event as well.
Representatives of the ABC Raceway will be on hand to assist drivers with such issues as rules clarifications, reserving pit spots, licensing and memberships. Chris Bretting and his FastLane staff will also be available to help with racing parts and equipment needs, plus valuable tips and information.
The car show will be held rain or shine, there is no charge for admission, and the public is certainly welcome. A special edition of “Race Night” will be broadcast on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and streamed online at www.wbszfm.com, from 10 am until noon live from the event.
The open practice session originally set for May 10 has been cancelled due to the wet grounds. If this is rescheduled, the club will post the date and time on the Raceway’s website as well as in this publication / on this site. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road.
