Before Independence, Britisher observed the need of educational development in technology field and established IITs in India. Later these fruitful institutions are much farther to rural and those who live in below poverty line. The Honorable chief minister Dr. Y.S.RAJASHEKAR REDDY observed the line of difference in education between rich and poor up to rural level.

Dr. RAJ REDDY born in a poor family, an undeveloped village struggled hard and became an intellectual person. At the time of his education the word computer is not much familiar to the world. He could able to reach his goal by achieving a PhD in Computer science from Stanford University in 1966. To erase the line of difference between rich and poor especially in educational field, he brought his ideas and opinions to the Chief Minister’s desk.

The two dignitaries laid the foundation in the form of IIITs at three corners of AP to develop the stage and state of Andhra Pradesh. The main idea is to bring economically backward but rich in I.Q through Information Technology.

Prior to this the students either from a private school or from a rich family are only able to reach latest and updated education system.

The aim of RGUKT is to change this criteria and it is to provide a high quality educational opportunities for the rural youth of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) based on the intensive use of Information Technology.

Compared to other colleges, RGUKT provides a new model of liberal professional education creating future leaders with a broad understanding of the world.

In March 2008, the AP Government created RAGIV GANDHI UNIVERSITY OF KNOWLEDGE TECHNOLOGIES (RGUKT) by an act of the Legislature as a full-fledged university which would initially admit roughly the top 1% of the rural students into the three residential campuses

The three institutions (IIIT s) are established under RGUKT, one at Basara (Adilabad dt.) , Nuzvid (Krishna dt.)  and Rajiv Knowledge Valley ( Kadapa dt.)

The very first batch of about 6500 students were admitted into a six year integrated program based on the local best model where students receiving the top marks in every subject.

The six years integrated course provides a strong foundation for the technical and professional courses.

The method of education in RGUKT is “Learning by doing” and “Problem based learning”.

For this method of education they provide a highly qualified and meritorious faculty will be participated in teaching , learning  and research. Many of them are being drawn from the world class institutions such as IITs.

Those who obtains minimum 9.5 CGPA in SSC or any other equivalent examinations can apply. Applying candidates must mention their campus preferences.

The selection authorities will provide seats depending on the following basis:

Selection criteria :

He/She should be one of the Toppers.

Mandal topper – Each category carries one seat among them.

Forward caste

Schedule caste

Schedule Tribe

Backward classes

Ex-service men children

Physically handicapped

The greatness of RGUKT is giving preferences 85% to mandal toppers and only 15% to urban/city toppers. To fulfill the objective of the RGUKT, selection authority proved it by providing these 85% seats from government high school students ( Who are studying in government high schools are usually below poverty line).

33% of reservation is provided to uplift the education in the rural girls.

To develop sports in Andhra Pradesh, RGUKT provided sports quota at the time of admission.

The campus allotment is purely based on the student nativity.

The greatness of RGUKT is to provide fee re-umbersment.

The three campuses are located in three corners(Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, Telangana) of Andhra Pradesh.

SIX YEAR INTEGRATED COURSE:

The foot step into any IIIT, the student will be provided with an individual laptop which is connected by a LAN provided with high internet facility. The educational system in RGUKT is purely “Learning by doing” which depends on individual capability.

Generally students will listen and convert them into their own victorial methods as per their knowledge which does not reaches the actual. In RGUKTs the actual pictures and all the examples were visible which makes their studies more accurate. All the theoretical problems must be solved practically and there is no exemption in this. This method is improving the students capability, calibrate accuracy, speed and adjust ability in critical conditions providing solutions on spot, rising of one’s I.Q.

Easily understandable, Easy to learn, Easy to grasp, Easy to develop.

RGUKT admits the selected candidates after their 10th class into the 6 –year undergraduate engineering program involving the combination of a Pre- University course (PUC) and a bachelor’s degree in Technology (B.Tech). Examination System:

The university follows the semester pattern and credit system of evaluation. The academic year is divided into 2 semesters. Each course shall have an integer number of credits, which reflects its weight age. This helps the student to know the academic effort one has to put in, to successfully complete a course.

The system of evaluation in RGUKT is different from that of conventional universities. RGUKT has a multi-tier system of evaluation. There will be continuous assessment of students’ performance throughout the semester and marks will be awarded. Each theory subject in a semester is evaluated for 100 marks, and the weight age of marks is given below:

The theory courses have the following two components:

Continuous evaluation through(40% weight age)

Computer based online tests.

Weekly (10% weight age)

Monthly(30% weight age)

The semester-end examinations is through( weight age 60%)

Computer based online tests(40% weight age)

Paper based written test(20% weight age)

The laboratory courses have the following two components.

Continuous evaluation of laboratory work in lab class. Each laboratory course may be evaluated as follows:

Experimental work in Laboratory class.

Lab report.

Viva Voce.

Semester-end examinations

Experimental work, Results & report.

Viva voce.

The system of numerical marking is followed and the marks secured in Weekly tests, Monthly tests and End examination are recorded and converted into grades as per the Seven-point grading scale.

Students who have failed to earn minimum pass marks of 40% in each course/subject will have to appear for the backlog courses/subjects in the Remedial Examinations. If the marks of test are increased the same will be considered for declaration of result.

In order to provide an additional chance to students who fail in one or more theoretical or practical subjects in a semester, there will be a remedial examination equivalent to the end semester examination. However the grade of such student wil be lowered down by one grade i.e. if a student gets a ‘B’ grade it will be reduced to ‘C’ grade. Student securing minimum grade for passing (i.e. grade ‘P’) will not be lowered.

CAMPUS LIFE:

RGUKT is a fully residential environment. It is essential to provide a fully residential campus with all of the facilities included such as a shops, hospitals, bank, laundry, barbershops, etc. appropriate for a community of about 20,000 people consisting of 12,000 students, 3000 faculty and staff and 5000 service providers of various types. The Director of the institute also becomes the pseudo-Mayor of this township dealing with the typical problems of community based living. Since the students are joining the institution at the age of 15 where they are undergoing physical transformation and hormonal changes, being away from home adds to their stress. The local Health Clinic must provide for Psychological Counseling and support.

As a fully residential program, all the students will stay on the campus. The program is intensive and runs for 3 semesters of 16 weeks of 6 days a week each. Only 6 weeks of vacation is permitted: 1 week in Dasara, 1 week in Sankranthi and four weeks in summer.

Each class of about 50 students will have mentors who will conduct a discourse and discussion around a prerecorded expert lecture. The best part of this learning paradigm is that students will have time in these class sessions to receive the lecture, ask questions, discuss with the help of mentors and apply the concepts to problem solving.

Separate and secure hostel facilities will be provided for girls and boys. Food and dining facilities will be according to modern standards.

SPORTS & GAMES:

RGUKT provides facilities for both indoor games such as caroms and chess and outdoor games such as volleyball and basketball and cricket.

SHOPPING CENTER:

To cater to the needs of students, there is a general store, a canteen and salon in every hostel. Students can make use of these services at a reasonable price.

Extra-Curricular activities in RGUKT:

RGUKT’s goal is to give students a well-rounded education and doesn’t stop with just giving students an education in the Sciences and Engineering. Students are encouraged to get involved in arts, music , drama , debate, paintings and other elated skills. At this point, there is no full time faculty for these disciplines but it is anticipated to hire full time faculty and visiting faculty also.

Health and Safety:

RGUKT provides its students and staff all the necessary medical facilities. A medical center with the required facilities is under construction and is anticipated to be operational soon. The center will have 30 beds and 3 doctors.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND PLACEMENT CELL(CDPC)

Apart from providing top class education the novel method of teaching and learning through Information and Communication Technology(ICT), Career development and Placement Cell(CDPC) is established at the head quarters under the supervision of a Faculty in charge (FIC) to act as a catalyst in providing students with various facilities that support career decision-making, exploration and building and provide opportunities to develop confidence and skills that are necessary to choose proper and right career.
