I am a student of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology. This college is located in Govindpura, Yelahanka. It is located right behind the Indian Air Force and Border Security Force Compound. Firstly I would like to tell the reader why I chose to be a part of this college. As one may know people tend to choose a college based on where they want to live or where their parents or siblings are or where their friends are joining. I basically wanted to be a mechanical engineer because of my love for aircrafts and robots. Students fresh out of school decide to give various entrance exams. Similarly even I gave a couple of exams like IIT-JEE, AIEEE, CET, etc.  But unfortunately I managed to crack two of the exams in which I managed to secure B.Sc. in Humanities in the prestigious IISc and an 8000 rank in CET. So I decided to go for the colleges offered to me through CET. After doing brief survey I found about this college and shockingly a professor who taught my uncle in IIT-KGP was also in this college. So I was enrolled and my journey to become an engineer started in this college.

Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore

Before I start off with my topic, I would like to give the reader a brief history about my college. NMIT is a college who has its sister counterpart in Mangalore known as NMAM Institute of Technology. The latter is the oldest college under the same trustee. NMAM Institute of Technology was established by Justice Kawdoor Sadananda Hegde, who served as the speaker of Lok Sabha and as a Supreme Court Judge. Both the engineering colleges under this trustee are autonomous. My college, NMIT, had established in the year 2001. NMIT is the youngest engineering college in India to be conferred the prestigious Autonomous Status by UGC, New-Delhi in the year 2007.

The Main Block

The college provides a four year engineering graduate program leading to award of Bachelor of Engineering Degree. The graduate program is considered to be autonomous whereas the post graduate programs are under the direct control of the Visveswaraya Technological University. The college campus covers an area of 22 acres.

The college aims to provide “India and the world, technical manpower of the highest academic excellence by shaping today’s youth through holistic and integrated education of the highest quality”.

The college being autonomous benefits the student in various ways. Primarily it provides flexibility in the course and an excellent choice based credit system. Unlike the conventional curriculum laid down by the university, our college aims to test students in regular intervals to measure the understanding, competence and most important, the knowledge of the subject. The autonomous scheme evaluates the students not by the percentage of the marks but the cumulative grade point obtained. The entire course is tailored in a way such that the students are well prepared in Mathematics, Engineering along with different specializations in the respective fields, along with capacity to apply professional knowledge in the respective field. In this fast moving global scenario, the college aims to equip its students a well-balanced personality and knowledge to solve any given problem with highest credibility and ethical standards. To sum it all up, the course is created to prepare the students to work in the relevant industries and various R&D establishments. Along with the knowledge of the subjects the autonomy of this college ensures its students to imbibe good leadership qualities including the ability to work as a team and grow together.

The college provides seven undergraduate programs and three post graduate programs. They are namely Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Information Science Engineering courses as the graduate programs, and Master of Technology, MBA and MCA course as post graduate programs. The college has various centers for R&D which will be discussed under the respective departments.

Mechanical and Civil Blocks

Firstly I would like to start off with the Basic Science Department. This department comprises mainly of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The first year is divided into two semesters i.e. one monitored by the Physics and the other by the chemistry department. The main objective of this department is to provide sound knowledge of the fundamental subjects which is essential for all the engineering students. This department specializes in the field of medicinal chemistry, Nano technology, etc. The physics lab is 392 sq. mtr with a very good infrastructure and also has a dark room to observe diffraction and other light related experiments. The mathematics department was established in the year 2001. It has a research center recognized by the Visveswaraya Technological University and the Mysore University. This department has done various researches in the fields of fluid mechanics, Numerical methods, Partial differential equation & Graph theory. The basic science department also comprises of the Humanities department. This department is responsible for providing knowledge on engineering ethics, technical communications, constitution of India and environmental science.

Then, I would like to start off with my department. I am a student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This department was started in the year 2002 with a total intake of forty five students and is one of the oldest departments of this college. This department headed by Dr. Wg Cdr P.B Shetty is one of the best departments for studying Mechanical Engineering in Karnataka. This department consist faculties who are also board members of renowned associations like Institute of Indian Foundry Men and Naval Research Board (Defense Research Development Organization). This department comprises of various subjects related to thermal, design, material science, fluid dynamics. The department mainly aims to inculcate the students about the designs and working of various mechanical systems alongside various leadership and ethical qualities. The main objective of the course is to provide the society with efficient Mechanical Engineers who are capable enough to solve the problems given to them in the fast moving society. The department provides research facilities in the field of Finite Element Method, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Stir Casting etc. The department has its research activities funded by organizations like Naval Research Board, IEDC, VTU and various public and private industries. The few of the faculty members are also working as consultants for companies like Fluidyn. The department also contains the state of the art equipment for various laboratory experiments. The students actively participate in presenting their research papers in papers like IEEE, IJETR, etc. Through this association, students are motivated towards innovation and presenting papers in International Conferences like ICASIDO9, INNOVATE-INDIA 09, etc. This department has much collaboration with several industries. Companies like Infosys, Wipro, EMC^2 has trained the faculty and the students of this department in various fields like Storage Area Network, etc. This department was also a part of Wipro’s Mission10X program which has trained the faculty to enhance their ability in teaching and thereby preparing the students for the industry exposure. The department actively forms a part of an important project called as STUDSAT which in a part of ISRO. This department provides M.Tech in CSE. There are six labs with well-equipped work stations and servers.

STUDSAT is an organization made by the consortium of seven colleges from Karnataka and Hyderabad headed by NMIT. This project is completely conceptualized and managed by the undergraduate students. STUDSAT-1 was India’s first picosatellite which was launched on 2010. This satellite is the smallest satellite launched by any Indian organization. NMIT has its own ground station to control this satellite which has been evaluated by several scientists including Dr. U. R. Rao, former chairman of ISRO. The main function of this satellite was to perform a function of remote sensing satellite and take images of the surface of the earth which was considered to be the best achievement achieved by any satellite of the same size. The ground station, NASTRAC, was inaugurated by Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, former chairman of ISRO. The present project STUDSAT-2 is a combination of twin satellites. The main objective of this satellite is to provide real time connectivity between any two satellites. The completion of this project will provide India with its first twin Nano satellites capable enough to provide inter satellite communications.
