The National Institute of Technology Uttarakhand also known as NIT Uttarakhand or NITUK. It is a public engineering institution in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It was founded in 2010 being one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand is one among the ten newly sanctioned NITs in 2009.The institute is fully funded by Government of India under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). It is among one of the best colleges of Uttarakhand. The facilities provided by the management of college are better than any other college. At present, the institute offers full time B. Tech. Program in Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering with an intake of 60 students in each branch.

The location and environment of NIT Uttarakhand make it one of the best colleges in Uttarakhand. The institute is located in Srinagar Garhwal. Srinagar is an important Valley Bazar in the hills. It has a number of temples and monuments and places for tourists to stay. Srinagar is at the left bank of Alaknanda River. It has an average elevation of 560 meters (1,837 feet). It is the largest city in the Garhwal Hills. It is reached by national highway NH58 from Rishikesh; Srinagar is about 100 km from Rishikesh which is the last city on the plains of Uttarakhand and from where the mountains start.

NIT Uttarakhand is situated in the beautiful valley of Srinagar (Garhwal) in the temporary campus of Government Polytechnic. It has several buildings in which different departments and sections of the Institute are functioning.

NIT Uttarakhand has extended the temporary campus by fabricating three new buildings and one play ground in the old ITI campus. New laboratories in various departments have been constructed with advanced facilities. Engineering departments and administrative offices have been shifted to the new campus. The Institute has got wide space for each department with construction spread over more than 13,000 sq. meter of area.

MEDICAL FACILITY

Basic medical facility is provided to cater to the health issues of the students and staff members through Dispensary. Medical facility is available in the Institute. The Institute has got tie-up with the hospitals. Nurse is available in the Institute for 24 hours.

TRANSPORTATION

In case of any emergency, Institute provides transport facility to students and staff members 24 hours. At present, two vehicles are hired by Institute to facilitate transportation.

Institute provides combined mess facility to students. Special care is taken to provide clean and hygienic surrounding in the premises of the mess. Food quality and water purity is checked regularly by concerned authorities from time to time. Regular meetings are conducted with students’ representatives at definite intervals to ensure students’ satisfaction.

PERMANENET CAMPUS

The permanent campus of NIT Uttarakhand is being constructed in Sumari, Srinagar (Garhwal), extending over 300 acres of land. Sumari is located at a distance of ~22 Km from Srinagar on approximately 30 minutes travelling time. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Harish Rawat laid the foundation stone of permanent campus of NIT Uttarakhand on 19 February 2014. Shri Satpal Maharaj, MP Pauri Garhwal, Harak Singh Rawat, Cabinet Minister of the Government of Uttarakhand, Ganesh Godiyal, MLA Srinagar, Garhwal presided over the session.

ADMINISTRATION

The Institute is led by Chairman and Director with the help of 49 Faculty members, 10 Trainee Teachers, 4 Officers, 15 Staff members and 15 Contractual staffs.

ACADEMIC STRUCTURE

At present, NIT Uttarakhand offers B. Tech. and Ph.D. programmes. Initially, the institute started B. Tech. programmes in three branches with an intake of 30 students per branch. Currently the Institute is conducting B. Tech. programmes in five branches with an intake of 60 students in each branch. Following are the branches for B. Tech. courses:

ADMISSION

B.Tech. Program:

The admission to B.Tech Degree programmes at NIT Uttarakhand is through Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). Admissions will be on the basis of All India Rank (AIR) prepared by CBSE considering score in JEE (Main) and normalized score of Class 12th or equivalent qualifying exam (60% & 40% weight age, respectively).

Ph.D. Program:

For the admission in the Ph.D. program, candidates are shortlisted for written test on the basis of required qualification. The qualified candidates are called for personal interview. After qualifying, the candidates are provisionally admitted for Ph.D. in the Institute. Their registration for Ph.D. program at the Institute is confirmed only after successful completion of Pre-Registration viva-voce.

FACULTY AND STAFF

The primary focus of the Institute has always been on facilitating quality education. To meet this purpose, many meritorious and spirited faculty members, from different parts of the country, have been recruited in different departments of the Institute from time to time.

The student-faculty ratio is 14:1 approximately.

For ensuring proper growth of the students, teachers guide the students as Faculty Advisors.

Teachers assist students in varied extra-curricular activities including sports, cultural activities, etc.

CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 2013 with an intake of 60 students. The Department offers a four-year course leading to the Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Department of Civil Engineering has advanced academic structure with core course and variety of elective courses so that the students’ knowledge is not only enhanced in core discipline but also in the related disciplines

Department has well qualified faculties with wide variety of specialized area. The department has fully functional engineering mechanics, strength of material and fluid mechanics laboratories. The department is also in a process to start most of other laboratories by the end of August 2014 and establish remaining laboratories by the end of December 2014.

COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is an integral part of National    Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand. The curriculum is a blend of the conventional and the radical. It is updated regularly to keep up with the growing demands and the changing trends of the software industry and research laboratories. Core courses include Programming Languages, Computer Architecture, System Software, Networking Technologies and Artificial Intelligence. The Department is equipped with latest computers with Intel i7 processor, 1TB Hard disk, 4 GB RAM and 23 inch monitors for comfortable view for students. The Department has made available several facilities in the Institute such as Internet Connectivity of 34 Mbps from BSNL, Wi-Fi facility in the whole campus, 24 X 7 surveillance of computer laboratories etc.

Computer center is the unique feature of the department and is located near student hostels. The students can access the Internet in computer center from 8:00 in the morning to 8:30 in the evening. The computer center has two powerful servers from Dell and IBM. The faculty members are working in the potential research areas like cloud computing, natural language processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, network security, image processing, distributed systems etc.

The Department provides students enough opportunities to grow by organizing workshops in latest technologies and guest lectures by inviting faculties from reputed institutions such as IITs, NITs and others. The students may involve themselves in cultural and technical events held in the Institute besides the academic activities. Students get opportunity of working as placement coordinators and learn many things such as communication skills, planning and management which are hands on experience for them to gain before job. The Department has set up various platforms for students to master the cutting edge technologies. The establishments of new laboratories with latest computer systems are in the process of being set up and will be set up in the near future.

ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

The Electrical Engineering Department was established during the inception of the institute in 2010. Department has a fine blend of young and dynamic faculty, providing quality education. The major areas of faculty expertise include Power Systems, Electrical Drives and Control & Instrumentation. The department is planning to start M. Tech program in Electrical Engineering. This will be a unique program in which the students will have the freedom to choose their specialization in Power Electronics, Power System, Control System, and Integrated, Electronics, Biomedical, etc. depending upon the choice of elective subjects in first and second semester.

The Department aims to achieve excellence by establishing well equipped laboratories in the core areas of Electrical Engineering like Electrical Machines, Power Systems and Power Electronics. The students here work on creative application projects with innovative design. ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

Started during 2010-11 session, the department offers B. Tech. program in Electronics and Communication Engineering. From the very beginning, the ECE department has taken lead in establishing well equipped and modern lab facilities for its students. NIT Uttarakhand has latest National Instruments Lab-View Laboratory set-up. The Lab-View Laboratory consist of National Instruments hardware like Data Acquisition Cards, Signal Conditioning Units along with the latest version of National Instruments Lab-View Software, Vision Development Module, Signal Express, NI Matrix , Lab Windows, Measurement Studio and toolkits etc.

The Department of Electronics and Communication engineering of NIT Uttarakhand is uniquely equipped, and obliged to educate the leaders the world needs now. It is one of the three major branches offering B.Tech and PhD courses to top rank holders from India. The department is well equipped with Basic Electronics Lab, Digital Lab, Analog Lab, Communication Lab, and VLSI lab, Embedded Systems Lab, Microprocessor and Microcontroller Lab and has excellent teaching staffs to nurture the innovative minds. Electronics and Communications Engineering is the study of electronic components, integrated circuits, microprocessors and communication systems. It consists of designing, testing and maintaining the manufacturing of electronic equipment and communication systems. This branch of engineering has a key place in the field of computers, electronics, electrical, communication systems etc.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand was established in 2012 and currently has an intake of 60 students per year. The Department offers a four-year B.Tech course and a PhD program. The department has flexible academic structure with numerous core and elective courses, to facilitate the students to opt for the courses of their interest. Presently, the department has one associate professor, six assistant professors, and two Trainee Teachers. All the faculty members are well qualified from reputed institutions like IITs and NITs. The area of specialization of all faculties has a lot of diversity that covers various aspects of Mechanical Engineering and is capable to mold young minds into successful professionals.

The department is fully equipped with laboratories for core courses such as Machine Tools Laboratory, Strength of Materials Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics and Machines Laboratory, Applied Thermodynamics Laboratory, Heat Transfer Laboratory, Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines Laboratory, Computer Aided Design Laboratory and Mechanical Workshop. DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

With a continued commitment towards quality education and training, the department of Sciences and Humanities is persistently striving to reach the ultimate goal of international standards. The Department, since its inception in 2010, has vouched for the quality teaching and research. The Library and Information Centre supports the teaching, research and academic programmes of the Institute. The library has Open Access System along with a reading room facility.

The Library houses a total collection of over 31,000 printed books (with 6000 titles) which includes Text Books and Reference Books in different fields.

There are around 26,457 titles of E-books available from various renowned publishers which can be accessed 24×7 by the users of the Institute.

The library uses LS Ease software package which is an integrated multi-user library management system that supports all In-house activities of the library.

56 Magazines (including yearbooks) and 12 Newspapers (i.e. 10 daily + 2 weekly) have been subscribed by the library.

The motto of the NIT Uttarakhand is “Sports for All, All for Sports”

One of the specialties of the Institute is that it gives utmost importance to games and physical activities to strengthen its students physically as well as mentally. Student life on playing ground is an integral part of Institute’s curriculum.

Physical education has been made compulsory for the first year students.

Students are encouraged to participate in Inter-NIT and other open competitions.

There are various indoor and outdoor sports facilities, such as, Volleyball, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Cricket, Table–Tennis, Chess, Carom, gymnasium and much more. Sports arena has well-equipped facilities so that the students can practice at night also.

Institute organizes regular intramural sports activity of various games and sports.

Institute organizes inter NIT & other open tournaments in various games and sports from time to time.

Institute has the facility of Adventurous sports activities like river rafting/kayaking and ice skiing and organizes such activities every year (river rafting/kayaking in Alakhanda River and ice skiing at Auli)

LEARNING THROUGH ENJOYMENT

The budding minds of students need proper nourishment. Keeping this in mind, various clubs have been started to provide a platform for grooming their creative talents. A taste for Music, Dance, Movies, Photography, Creative writing, Astronomy is inculcated in students through different clubs. This helps in the blooming of personality of the students.

COUNCIL OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES (CSA)

The Council provides students of NIT Uttarakhand opportunities for involvement, leadership experience and the ability to create fun and exciting programs that enhance the energy of campus life. The first council was constituted through general elections held in September 2013 and Mr. Avnish Kumar was elected its first Vice-President. The general elections for the Second Council were held on April 12, 2014. Mr. Chandramauli Singh was elected as the second Vice-President of CSA. The CSA council plays significant role in several academic and extra-curricular activities of students.

HOW TO REACH

Temporary campus is located in Govt. Polytechnic, Srinagar (Garhwal). Srinagar is 105 Km from Rishikesh on NH-58 heading towards Badrinath (193 Km from Srinagar). The nearest railway station is Rishikesh. Haridwar, one of the major railway station of state, is 130 Km from Srinagar. Nearest airport is situated at Jolly Grant, Dehradun which is 125 Km away from Srinagar. Taxis/Buses are available from Airport as well as the railway station for Srinagar. It takes 4-5 hours to reach Srinagar from Rishikesh.
