Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology(GIMT) was established in the year 2006.It was founded on 7th September 2006 as the first non-governmental institute in the North East India under the wing of Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society, a society that has been formed in the year 1992. The society was established with a view to make significant contribution to the society by providing quality education and to work for the social upliftment and to inculcate a sense of discipline among the youth’s of the society. The main motto of this Society is “Truth, Discipline and Excellence”.



Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology (GIMT) was established with due approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. It is also affiliated to the most reputed and oldest University of the State i.e. Gauhati University. The institute has also been affiliated to the “Assam Science and Technical University” (ASTU) which is a newly created university of the government of Assam. Since August 2013 all the admissions are taken under the Assam Science and Technical University and the older batches who are under the Gauhati University will continue till the completion of their academic curriculum.

The first session of the Institute commenced on 13th July 2006 with 240 students in four disciplines of the Bachelor’s degree namely Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE), Applied Electronics and Instrumentation (AEI), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Information Technology (IT). Two more undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical Engineering (EE) were added in the years 2007 and 2008 respectively. The first post-graduate course in Business Administration leading to award of M.B.A degree was introduced in the year 2008. In 2009, the second post graduate course in Computer Application leading to award of M.C.A degree commenced at the institute.

The Institute also has approval from AICTE to start Master of Engineering (M.E.) courses in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) and Instrumentation & Control Engineering (ICE). Classes for M.E. in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) have already started since September 2012.The Institute is also planning to start the other two M.E. /M. Tech courses in the near future. Moreover, Gauhati University has recognised the Laboratories of the Department of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering for the Ph.D. programme. The Institute is likely to offer the Ph.D. program in the coming year.

As compared to other Institutes in the region GIMT has various unique features about its location, infrastructure, and facilities and most importantly the academic results which are so rich that it has made GIMT to hold a strong position among the best colleges of the region. The Institute is located at Azara covering over 6 acres of land. It is a beautiful spot with the famous Deepor Beel, a water body with natural beauty and the station for many migrating birds. It is also been declared as a bird sanctuary. The majestic Khasi and Jayantia hills stand on the southern side of the Deepor Beel giving a magnificent view of the natural beauty. The area provides a good atmosphere for the academic prosperity. It is also well connected with the Guwahati city. The transportation is also hustle free and convenient as the National Highway is also on the side of the Institute, the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is also just at five kilometres distance and it is just sixteen kilometres away from the Guwahati Railway Station.

Coming to infrastructure, GIMT has central library, central workshop, central computing facility, laboratories, language laboratory, seminar halls and also a GIMT-BOSCH joint certification centre. A brief overview of each of these is given below:

Central Library:-The Central Library occupies total floor area of more than 450 sq. m. There is a spacious reading room to accommodate at least 200 persons for self-study. The functioning of library is computerized with integrated library management software. The library is equipped with national and international journals of both printed and online forms for the benefit of the student and the faculty. Ten computers with broadband connection and LAN have been provided to browse the various e-journals available in the library. The Library is stocked with an adequate number of latest edition text books. At present it has more than 18000 volumes of books. Continued efforts are made to add new books as new subjects are added to the syllabus of various departments.

Central Workshop:-The Central workshop measuring 450 sq. m. has been equipped to provide all the facilities for the basic training of the Engineering students in turning, machining & welding, fitting, carpentry and black smithy trades. The facilities of the workshop are also utilized for making models etc. for students’ projects works and minor repair works of College fleets of transports, constructional works requirements and meeting the need of other Departments / Laboratories of the college. It also imbibes interest in some modification works on existing equipment and the students develop habits and much needed interest in such activities.


Central Computing Facility:-The computing facility of the institute occupies a floor space of more than 300 sq. m. and houses around 200 computers loaded with Windows Vista/7 & Linux operating systems. All the computers are based on Dual Core and Intel core I5 Technology with some connected to wireless LAN through a central server with an ability to work on different platforms. Internet facility with 2 MBPS Broad Band is available to 85 % of the computers. Students are encouraged, from the very beginning, to use the computer independently in order to gain sufficient hands on practice. In addition to this, several Laboratories have large numbers computers dedicated to perform specified tasks in laboratory experiments. Each Department also houses a modern Computer centre equipped with sufficient numbers of computers with internet facility as per AICTE requirement. This centre is meant for use of department students exclusively. Also a separate Computer Centre, having about 100 computers, is in place for MCA students especially. The students enjoy access to different international and national journals from these centres.


Laboratories:-The institute has more than 60 laboratories to cater for all the departments running various engineering courses. All these laboratories are well equipped with the latest equipment to practice students on the latest technology and give the desired experience to them while in the institute. Continuous efforts to improve upon these laboratories are given to keep pace with the latest developments in various fields of engineering.

Language Laboratory:-The institute has created facility to train students in improving their mastery over the English language. This helps them immensely in facing interviews and takes part in group discussions. For this, the Institute has tied up with Orell Digital Langauge Lab, a world renowned company dealing with the subject. A separate laboratory has been provided with 31 computers (One faculty and 30 students computers). Orell Digital Language lab software has been installed in all the computers. Regular classes are being conducted for first and second semester students. The Humanities Department having good dedicated teachers is responsible to run this facility.

Seminar Hall:-A seminar hall allows the institute to conduct national level conferences, workshops and seminars within its own premises. It has a seating capacity of 200 persons, where GIMT conducts various state level and national level conferences.

GIMT-BOSCH Joint Certification Training Centre:-In a new initiative with immense help for the students, a GIMT – BOSCH Joint Certification Training Centre has been opened at our premises in February 2014. BOSCH which is a renowned German Company dealing in development and maintenance of petrol and diesel engines in a joint collaboration with the GIMT. GIMT is providing the infrastructure and the machines while BOSCH is providing the expertise. The first batch of students from GIMT has already undergone the training and it has gained a very positive feedback from the students. The cost of the training is being heavily subsidized by so that maximum students can benefit from the training.

Other facilities provided by GIMT includes

Transport:-GIMT has College Bus service along specified routes from the city to the college and back. The buses are strictly maintained to run on time .It has sufficient number of other vehicles for the office uses also.

Educational Loan:-The Institute extends support to the students in availing educational loan from banks. Public and private sector banks are encouraged to set up stalls during the admission period thereby helping the needy students. The Institute also has a scholarship facility.

Canteen:-A well-equipped canteen is housed in a spacious building providing hygienic breakfast, lunch, tea and snacks to students, faculty and staff members .The canteen provides foods at very moderate rates.

Hostel Facilities

Girls’ Hostel:-Construction of the Girls’ Hostel inside the college campus has almost been completed, with facility to house 190 girl students. Accommodation will be available for first semester girls. But as the demand is huge and the intake capacity is still limited so the service is provided on first come first served basis.

Boys’ Hostel:-One boys’ hostel is being run by the college authority outside the college premises. It is just a few minute distance from the college but the facilities are good.

DISCIPLINE AT GIMT:-GIMT maintains a strict hold in the matter of discipline. Students admitting to the college are strongly bound to abide by the rules and regulations as prescribed by the College Authority. Violation of these makes the students liable to disciplinary action. Conducts, which might attract disciplinary action, include irregular clearance of college dues, discourtesy to the teachers and the staff members in any form, resorting to strikes, indulging in any form of ragging, causing damages to college properties, consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places, smoking within the college premises, unsatisfactory progress in studies, rowdy behaviour inside and outside the college premises etc. The college authority imposes fines either individually or on per capita basis in the case of damages or loss of college property.

Students are always required to wear prescribed college uniform / dress to maintain uniformity and are required to carry the Identity. Without proper uniform no student is allowed to attend the classes. The use of mobile phone by students in the class room is also strictly prohibited.

GIMT is very strict about the attendance of students in their classes, since there is a direct relation between attendance and result in the examinations. As regards attendance in class, a student shall be only eligible to appear in the semester examination as a regular candidate provided they have at least 75% attendance in the individual subjects. For irregular students, a specific University regulation which includes debarring a student from appearing university examination due to lack of adequate percentage of attendance are also applied here. The college authority regularly issues timely reminders to the students to attend all classes from the very beginning of a semester. Students, failing to attain the required 75% attendance, are debarred from appearing in the semester-end examination of the Gauhati University /Assam science & Technology University.

Anti- Ragging Measures:-GIMT has adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards ragging and strives to achieve a completely ragging free institute. It has been reported that not a single case of ragging, even a very minor one, occurred in GIMT . GIMT also has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the menace of ragging. It has launched an awareness drive amongst the students about the seriousness and consequences of indulging in the act of ragging. To achieve this various measures are taken like awareness programs, Anti-ragging squad (ARS)  , Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC) and also all students who are seeking admission have to compulsorily sign affidavits . The names and mobile numbers of the members of the ARS are made available to the students for any fresher to lodge a complaint if subjected to any form of ragging by the seniors. A student found guilty of ragging is punishable by suspension/ rustication from the Institute.

GIMT has separate departments and laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A brief about the various core departments of GIMT are as follows

Department of Computer Application: – The Department of Computer Application was started in July 2009 with the objective of promoting specialized knowledge in the field of Computer Science and Computer Application. The motto of the department is “Never take a Backward Step”. At present the department is offering a postgraduate programme i.e. Master of Computer Application which is a three years programme and includes course works, summer projects and dissertation. The course is designed to develop appropriate skills and impart comprehensive knowledge in the field of computer applications.

All the faculty members of the department are well experienced and focuses on developing the student’s analytical and problem solving skill. The department takes special care of its students by counselling the students on a regular basis. The department also encourages its students to interact with people studying or working in various organizations in order to make feel of the real implementation of various technology and other developments around them. For this the department plans various tours industrial organization, educational institute and various companies.

Department of Computer Science & Engineering:-The Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology were started in September, 2006. The department has more than 200 computers running on Linux and windows with adequate software support. Most of the machines are wireless networked and are connected to broadband internet. The department has also access to common laboratories of the institute. The department trains the students with problem solving skills, teamwork, time management etc.

Department of Information Technology:-The Department was started from September 2006. It has five laboratories with about 170 computers running on Linux and Windows with adequate software support. Most machines are wireless networked and are connected to broadband internet facility.

Department of Electrical Engineering:- Electrical engineering plays an important role in the technological advancement in this world. It was started in July 2008.The curriculum of this branch with 81 courses/258 credits that include practical/seminar/training/ projects, etc, covers subjects of basic science, humanities and technology. The course structure, syllabi for the branch are basically power system oriented. A stage has today reached where an undergraduate must be trained to the latest techniques of analysis of large-scale power systems. That way, similar needs also exist in the industry where a practicing power engineer is constantly confronted with the challenge of the rapid advances in the field. Keeping these facts in mind, the course is designed in such a way that it encompasses important theory papers. Presently the department is fully equipped with the laboratories namely Basic Electrical Engineering Laboratory, Electrical Machines Laboratory, Electrical Measurements and Measuring, Instruments Laboratory, etc.

Department of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation:- Department of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation is one of the four branches of the Institute that started on 2006. It has both core subjects, interdisciplinary, departmental, and speciality subjects duly approved by the University. The students receive hand-on training in well equipped laboratories, workshop and computer centre as well as through seminars, project work and industrial training. The students are encouraged to pursue their hobbies and to participate in extra-curricular activities that make the education more inclusive.

Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering:-  The Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering was started in September,2006. The curriculum covers core subjects with particular emphasis on communication engineering. The students enrich their learning experience through practical seminars, industrial training, and projects. The motto is quality education.

Department Mechanical Engineering:- The department was established in the year with a motto of “Pursuit of Excellence” .With acquisition of sophisticated machineries and laboratory equipments set up in material science laboratory , research work is also envisaged. The department has its various laboratories, departmental library, and dedicated computer centre with internet facility. The Department also organises weekly seminars, group discussion etc.

Department of Business Administration:- The Department of Business Administration from July,2008 with a mission to import quality education in a stimulating and innovative environment where students can be empowered with knowledge and professional skills. The faculty members represent an excellent conglomerate of industry-academic exposure. The main motto is “The Urge to Learn Make Other Learn”. The department also encourages the students to organize seminars, workshops and awareness camp etc, for the benefit of the society. Moreover the department has Management Development Program and Entrepreneurship Development Program and other related activities.

The Training and Placement related matters are all handled by the Training and Placement Cell. The office is well equipped with excellent infrastructure to support every stage of the placement process. Arrangements for pre-placement talks, interviews, group discussions are handled by the Cell. The Cell has Training and Placement Officer, Faculty coordinators who are responsible for the various arrangements and process of contacting companies for recruitment.

The Institute has set up an Entrepreneurship Development Cell funded by the AICTE New Delhi. The cell in association with other premier Entrepreneur Institutes organizes various entrepreneurship awareness programme, and various business and management skill development programmes.

Apart from Academics, extracurricular activities are also given equal significance. For good quality output all round development of a student is taken care of. The Institute offers excellent opportunities to the students to participate in recreational and creative activities. Various clubs such as Career Counselling Club, Cultural Club, Drama Club, Handicraft Club, Literature Club, Movie Making and Movie Club Photography Club, Quiz and Debate Club, Robotics and Innovation Clubs and Sports Club. Also various soft skill training and personality development programmes have been adopted to enable the students to cope with the fast pace of this competitive world. Seminars, workshops and social activities are often organized to facilitate the students in developing their leadership skills and sense of responsibility. Besides this a number of interactive sessions with experts from industry and technical arena are often initiated to motivate the students and provide an insight into some major challenges of practical life. Industrial visits and tours are conducted mainly for pre-final year students to strengthen their theoretical knowledge and to build confidence for survival. In the field of literary works the wall magazine “UTTARAN” and the college magazine “GIMTECH” are incredible initiatives by the joint effort of the teachers as well as the students. GIMT thus has various initiatives starting from various clubs to various social initiatives which turns it an Engineering and Management Institute with a difference.

“EUPHUISM”, which is the annual cultural festival of the GIMT which is the most awaited by every GIMTian. It is generally organized in the January with a 3 day long agenda. This three comprises of various intercollege and intracollege events. This festival also targets some social issues as a part of its social responsibility. The event consists of both cultural and technical. Various intercollege events  that are organized includes Quiz, Debate, Science Model making, Photography contest, movie making, ad-making, essay writing, singing & dancing competitions etc. In addition to this various Inter-College Technical events like Robotics, Cryptex, Circuitronics, and Computer Gaming are also organized. Even Fun games like antakshri, rangoli, flower arrangement, spoon race, blind date etc. also there. Out of all the events the main attraction is ‘Glitters’ which is personality contest and various models, cine stars adds more glamour to this event. There are also cultural nites where various sensational artists gives their mesmerizing performances and makes the festival more memorable.

Based on the Academic Results of the students from different steams it is clearly evident that as compared to other colleges in the region the students of GIMT have excelled in all departmental/branch examinations with brilliant performance. Till date the students have topped the examinations with respect to most of the courses offered by GIMT. All these excellences are possible till date because of the dedicated faculties, excellent infrastructure facilities and high level academic discipline in the campus.
