GIMT (GirijanandaChowdhury Institute of Management and Technology), was founded on 7th September 2006 as the first non-governmental technical and management institute of North Eastern region. The institute is a branch of Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society, which is a registered service organisation set up in 1992. The institute was established with due approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and is affiliated to the oldest and reputed University of Assam, Gauhati University. Since August 2013 the, the institute has also been affiliated to newly created University by the Government of Assam named “Assam Science & Technology University”.
GIMT is the biggest private institution of Assam, providing bachelor degrees in six engineering branches viz. Mechanical Engineering(ME), Electrical Engineering(EE), Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering(ETE), Applied Electronics and Instrumentation(AEI), Computer Science and Engineering(CSE), Information Technology(IT) and also provide MBA and MCA education to all total of more than 700 students every year. Recently another branch Civil Engineering (CE)has been included to the institute. No other college in Assam has been able to provide such a wide range of advanced education till this date. The performances of all of the branches are also outstanding and it has been able to earn reputation in providing standard education to the students GIMT has also started its Master of Engineering (M.E.) under the approval from AICTE in three disciplines viz. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) and Instrumentation and Control Engineering (ICE). The laboratories of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Department have been recognized by Gauhati University for Ph.D programme.
Infrastructure:
The Infrastructure of this institute is world class in standard, with the central library, central workshop, central computing facility, finest laboratories, seminar hall, GIMT-BOSCH joint certification training centre, canteen and hostels.
Central Library
The central library of GIMT is well equipped and is disciplined in its working procedure. The library occupies a total floor area of 450 sq. m, which is much bigger than that of any other private engineering institution. It has more than 18000 volumes of different text books for engineering and management branch. The books of different branches have their specific stacks, so that students can easily pick out the books for their specific branch.
There is a large reading room with the sitting capacity of about 200 students, where students and faculty members can study. The library has a large collection of various national and international journals and magazines and daily newspapers. Ten computers with broadband and LAN connection have been provided in the library, where the students and faculty can search various topics, e-journals etc. for their projects and other purpose. The issue of books and all of the records of borrower of text books, date of issue and return date etc. are now monitored electronically, and all of the documents are stored in computers. There is also CCTV video camera facilities inside the library, so that any kind of unfairness can be inspected and corrected.
The workshop of the institute is of finest standard, with the provision of all the facilities for the basic training of the Engineering students in machining, turning, welding, fitting, carpentry and blacksmith trades. The workshop is a very big building with 450 sq. m of area, equipped with world class machinery equipment viz. Lathe machine (manual & automatic), Drilling machine, welding equipment, cutting machine, carpentry equipment like hammer, chisel, axe, file etc.

In the figure shown above there are two types of lathe machines one is manual and the other is automatic. A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the work piece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, knurling, drilling, turning etc. with some tools that are applied to the work piece to create an object which has symmetry about its axis of rotation.
Various types of Lathe machines are taken by the college authority, to suite both low level and high level engineering project and also for learning purpose. Some new lathe machines has been bought for making large engineering work pieces viz. large shaft, different types of gears, and other equipment required for large mechanical projects.
Some other machines present here are, Drilling machine, welding machineries etc. Different drilling machines are being used for different drilling purpose, for small hole we use drilling machine with drill of small diameter and for large hole,drilling machine with large drill is being used.

The welding machineries containoxy-acetylene cylinder, electrodes, metal pieces, and other protection equipment. The workshop of GIMT has been used for various large engineering projects taken by the students and also for research of the faculty member. The workshop of GIMT is the largest workshop among all other non-governmental technical institutes of Guwahati city. Some institutes like scholar institute, GIT, Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) are yet to build workshop of world class standard to achieve the standard of GIMT.
Central Computing Facility:
The computing facility of the institute is very much advanced, with more than 200 computers loaded with Windows XP/Vista and Linux operating system. The computer lab is a spacious hall of more than 300 sq. m area having a world class standard of design, air conditioned and well furniture. There is internet facility with 2 mbps Broadband connection available in most of them. The MBA and MCA laboratories have their separate computing facilities, each having about 100 computers with internet facilities as per AICTE requirement.
Along with central computing facility, there is also provision of desktop computers for faculty members of each branch, with high speed internet facilities.
GIMT has been successful in maintaining and providing world class computing facilities to the students which is not yet been achieved by most of technical institute of the city like NITS Mirza college, Scholar Institute, GIT etc. Moreover with best quality of computing facilities GIMT has also been successful to maintain the quantity of computer and internet facilities, which is much more than even some well-known technical institute of Guwahati like Don-Bosco Engineering college, Royal Global Institute etc.
Language laboratory:
These are the laboratories, equipped with desktop computers, used for specific purpose, e.g. microprocessor machine language lab, MATLAB laboratory, LABVIEW laboratory etc.
In microprocessor laboratory, the desktops are connected to microprocessor and microcontroller oriented circuit where students study the Real Time Embedded system.
In MATLAB laboratory, the tutorial classes of basic introduction to control system, process control, Graphic User Interface (GUI) etc. are being conducted.The LABVIEW laboratory is newly introduced in order to fulfil the requirement of M. Tech programme of ICE (Instrumentation and Control Engineering) branch.

New schemes are also taken by the Instrumentation branch of the institute for constructing more advanced instrumentation laboratories in near future to fulfil the requirement of ph.D programme also. AICTE has funded lab set up under MODROBs (Modernisation & Removal of Obsolescence) named VIRTUAL SYSTEM LAB to carry out different projects on Electrical as well as Electronics Engineering. This project is implemented using the software named “LABVIEW” which also incorporates real time applications.
Mechanical Laboratory:

In addition to these laboratories, the Physics and Chemistry laboratories also have been set up, for the students of the 1st and 2nd semester. These laboratories are also well equipped with the modern lab instruments, and also useful for research programme carried out by the faculty members of Physics and Chemistry department. Seminar Hall:
GIMT also has a well decorated and air conditioned spacious Seminar hall, with sitting facilities of well furniture, with inbuilt facilities of movie projection and high quality sound facility. The seminar hall has the capacity of conducting national level conferences, workshops and seminar with the seating capacity of 200 persons. GIMT has recently conducted a national level of conference on Mathematics on the occasion of birth anniversary of legendary mathematician Ramanujan, and a state level seminar named “A symposium on the recent trends of Instrumentation and Control system” has been successfully organised, where elite scholars of the state has been invited. Moreover representatives and H.R. of various national and international companies coming for recruitment process have delivered their pre-placement speeches in the seminar hall and appreciate the facilities.
GIMT-BOSCH Joint Certification Training Centre:
A new initiative has been taken by the authority of GIMT, by opening the GIMT-BOSCH Joint Certification Training Centre in 2014, where the students are provided a training of recent trends of the technology. BOSCH is a renowned German company, dealing in development and maintenance of diesel and petrol engines. The company has also recruited here, has given good feedback about the performance of our students.
In the joint collaboration, GIMT is providing the infrastructure and the machines, while BOSCH is providing their technology and expertise. The cost of this valuable training is heavily subsidized by the college authority of GIMT, so that maximum students can benefit from the training.
Moreover the institute frequently organises various technical workshops like; workshop on Robotics, Android application workshop, workshop on database and coding etc. Subsidies are also applied on these workshops too. In comparison to other non-governmental technical institutes GIMT has been always in the top of the list of organizing such kind of events, which shows the tremendous potential of the this institute and also the students of it, which upgrade the academic standard of this institute in a tune with the recent development of the technology.
Training and Placement Cell:
The training and placement cell of GIMT has been founded on August, 2009. The cell is one of the most important parts of our institute and also popular in the city, more than that of any other non-governmental technical institute of Guwahati, for its huge success in creating tremendous job opportunities for the students of GIMT. Since its establishment, the company is being able to make good relationship in between the academic and corporate houses by organizing various seminar, industrial training, summer placement etc.The TPO (Training and Placement Officer) has been successful in encouraging the students by providing them regular and instant information about various companies that would come to the campus. And every year most of the students are placed in different companies, which come to the on-campus or pool-campus. The numbers of companies recruiting is gradually increasing every year. Around 16 companies have already recruited in the first 6 months session and up to this date of the 2nd session of the final year, 2011-15 batch students. This is a good success rate for a newly established non-governmental technical institute and is much better performance in comparison to other private technical colleges.

Placement:
The Training and Placement (T & P) cell conducts all aspects of the placements. The placement cell is well equipped with all kind of facilities to and with excellent infrastructure to support every aspects of the training process. All kind of arrangements like pre placement talk, online test, group discussion, interviews are conducted by a committee of placement coordinators and TPO itself. In the placement coordinators committee, a group of active students from each branch has been nominated and all kind of training and placement process are driven by the help of this committee. All kind of placement policies and other related activities are handled by the Training and Placement Officer in consultation with the coordinator committee. The procedure of recruitment conducted by Training and placement cell of GIMT has been elaborated below:
The TPO send invitation to all the companies which has recruited earliaer and also to new companies.
On receiving the eligibility criteria from the company, the T & P cell prepare a list of the interested students fulfilling the eligibility criteria and sends it to the respective company.
A suitable date for the company’s visit is worked out.
After receiving the confirmation letter from the respective company, the T & P cell organizes pre-placement talk for the students.
On the date of interview, the company shortlisted the students based on the information provided by the TPO and they are allowed to face the interview.
The concerned company has come for the campus interview and the result is announced on the same day.
The H.R and the representative of the company are cordially behaved and are treated with lunch and other refreshment during the period of the recruitment.
This is how GIMT conducts its recruitment process, which is fully organized, and disciplined. There is no question, about the success rate of GIMT, which has been increasing in attracting various national and multi-national companies (MNC).
