TATVA

Tatva is a Sanskrit term meaning “matter” or “elements”.  Its adoption as the name for BNMIT’s full fledged technical festival was its symbolism for engineering students.  Just as the five elements of Panchatatvam, every engineer ought to possess five basic qualities of a good engineer.  These five attributes are Knowledge and Understanding (Sky), Logic and Reasoning (Air), Practicality (Earth), Modest and Humility (Water) and Innovation (Fire).

The event included a wide range of intra college events such as Pattern Print, Mock Stock, Tech Treasure hunt, Mock GD and PI , Tech DC, Photography, Tech Talk, Puzzles and Crosswords,  Circuit Designing, Crypt-o-rig, BBRoy, Essence (Auto Quiz).

The Inter college events were Potpourri, Tech Quiz, Paper presentation, Product Launch , Coding, Gaming (Counter strike, FIFA, Angry birds, NFS), Circuit Debugging, Blue print, Hogathon, Google it, Mock GRE and Design it.

Continuing the legacy of innovation inherited by the seniors, the organizing committee of TATVA introduced three new events for the intra college feast.  Pattern Print, BBRoy and Essence, and two new events for the inter college fest, Google IT and Design IT all of which received humongous response from the participants and was a great success.  Various informal events were also conducted to add a dash of fun to the fest.

SRISHTI SAMBHRAMA

A week –long fest held at BNMIT, gave the students a chance to get in touch with nature. Called ‘srishti sambhrama…the Earth Mother Festival’, this programme gave students a deeper understanding of Indian flora and fauna through exhibitions, screening of films on wildlife, interactive talks with conservationists and a panel discussion called ‘Spectrum of Expressions’. What was really interesting about this fest was open to the general public. Over 20 conservationists came together to exhibit their photographs, screen documentaries and share their own expertise and experiences with a cross-section of people.

BNMIT SCIENCE FORUM

The scientific Innovations and their implementation to cater to the relentless needs of mankind are the result of continuous efforts of an innovator to understand scientific concepts underlying the innovation.  The curiosity in innovative minds could be satiated by providing them a platform to share their ideas with likeminded people and experts in the field.  Such innovative state of kind could be present in our students and BNMIT Science Forum aims to provide a platform for such students.

The main objective of BNMIT Science Forum is to educate the current happenings in Science and Technology globally to the students and faculty of BNMIT.  The forum is intended to provide an opportunity to the students to inculcate in themselves the need to interact with eminent scientists in India and abroad.  The science forum also provides its members a platform through which they can gather information on recent developments/trends in research in the different fields of Science and Technology.

KALA BHAGEERATHI

We see talent all around us, but most of it, is not channelized.  This is mainly because it is not recognized, all individuals are special in their own way but to bring out what one is good at, all of us need that sight nudge on the back.  A support pool which recognizes talent and leads one to that next level of excellence is the BNMIT cultural forum Kala Bhageerathi.

Identifying and Recognizing the people who are talented is the biggest initiative of the cultural team, the intra collegiate fest “KALA BHAGEERATHI” is one such platforms for talent hunt in various fields like ABHINAYA, NAATYA, SANGEETHA, FINE ARTS, & LITERARY EVENTS.  One of the main events of KALA BHAGEERATHI is BNM IDOL where the most talented students complete for the ELITE Title.  The entire event is a big morale booster for the participants and a bonding factor for the students.  The whole event “KALA BHAGEERATHI” is organized by the students of the cultural team under the able guidance of Prof.N.Sheshaprasad, with ample support from the management.

“KALA BHAGEERATHI” singing and dancing team are invited annually to give concerts at Devagiri Venkateshwara temple and at Dharmagiri Manjunatha temple.

The BNMIT cultural team has always given stiff competition at the university youth festivalevery year, which is the biggest event of the year where more than 3000 students from the engineering colleges under VTU participate.

Our cultural team has shown a rapid progression from 6th place in 2003 at Tumkur to first runners up in the year 2006 in Nitte, Mangalore and 4th in 2008 at SIT Tumkur, to the top 1 position in 2010 at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering with 5 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals and proceeded on to the SOUTH ZONAL INTER UNIVERSITY CULTURAL FESTIVALS and have won many prizes at zonal level also.

KRISHNA T.V. the BNM Idol winner of 2010, has also won gold medals in VTU singing competitions and silver medal in the Light vocal solo competition at SAASTRA University, Tanjore, south zonal competition representing VTU in 2011 and has also done playback singing for Kannada films.

ASHISH RAMAKRISHNAN one of the most talented members of the cultural team, was the winner of ZEE SA RE GA MA and Zee Anthakshari in 2005 at all India level and CHINMAY ATHREYAS one more talented member of the cultural team, was titled “VOICE OF KARNATAKA” by ZEE KANNADA I n 2007 and both of them have sung for many films in Hindi, Telugu and Kannada.

KRITTIKA SREENIVASAN of Telecommunication department won BNM idol title for the year 2011 and has also participated in the gold medal winning group song competitions at VTU youth festivals.

Besides the VTU fest, our students have bagged many prizes in various inter collegiate cultural festivals organized by engineering colleges like IIT Madras, UVCE, NITTE, PESIT, RNSIT, BMSCE, AMC, RVCE, Sir MVIT & CMRIT.

The college cultural team also participated in the Young Tech India 2011 program organized by the VTU and Shruthandsmith foundation on September 2011 at Koramangala indoor stadium with a gathering  of more than 5000 students from all over Karnataka VTU affiliated engineering colleges and ours was the only college nominated by VTU to entertain the gathering with the musical programs under the guidance from Prof. .Sheshaprasad.

The very opportunity to participate at the university level provides each one of the students, a multitude of exposure and experience.  The cultural team works as a team with each member multitasking, for a number of varied events.  The entire experience is pragmatic as well as enriching and plays its own unique role in BNMIT’s efforts to go beyond academics.  A very heartening note about Kala Bhageerathi is that all the participants invariably are distinction holders or become one proving that extracurricular activities enhance academic performance contrary to the general belief that it comes in the way of good academic performance.

BNM FRIENDS OF NATURE CLUB

BNM FRIENDS OF NATURE CLUB established in 1995 believes that an understanding of nature will give each individual   a better perspective of the world as well as himself.  The nature club believes that nature teaches life’s lessons in its own subtle ways.

The admission to the nature club is based on the performance of the student in the Entrance Test.  Here the students are tested for their interest in wild life conservation and awareness of the environment, previous social activities undertaken and knowledge of wildlife, trees and forests etc.

The club has about 300 students members from BNMIT apart from 150 members from BNM schools.  First and foremost, they are taught about the importance of our environment and its conservation.  Awareness about their responsibilities and knowledge of our flora and fauna is given.  Further regular classes are held to teach them about bird watching, how to identify bird by their size, shape, types of beaks and claws, colour, sounds and songs, bird silhouettes as well as their nesting practices and their habitat.  They are also taught how to locate the birds and show to others without disturbing them etc.  Further the members are exposed to adventure sports of Para sailing, Rappelling, trekking, water sp[orts, environmental awareness programs, tree planting, bird watching field trips and bi-annual wilderness camps etc, along with regular audio visual programs and screening of Green Oscar award winning films & documentation of wild life conservation and environment protection.

The college is already using 100% of its manure with the compost made from its own vermicomposting facility.  The college has worked to develop a functioning and manageable recycling program and promotes recycling and renewable energy resources by conducting National level workshops.

Most of the birds are going away from the city as in the name of development; thousands of trees have been cut everyday to broaden the roads.  Hence this club has installed a number of NESTING BOXES along with BIRD FEEDERS to give the birds a safe place to live and breed in campus as well as in bigger parks in Bangalore city and suburbs.

A bi-annual excursion of 5 days to places like BANDIPUR, MUDHUMALAI, MUTTHODI (BHADRA), B R HILLS, NAGARAHOLE, YANA, KARWAR, AVALANCHE near OOTY, SHARAVATHY RIVER VALLEY, KODACHADRI, DANDELI etc is the most awaited event of the year.  Weekend bird watching to LALBAGH, KOKKARE BELLUR, BANNERUGHATTA NATIONAL PARK (Jungle area), RANGANATH HILLS near Harohalli, SAVANADURGA, MAGADI, MANCHANABELE Dam etc.

Activities such as moon light trekking, rock climbing, rappelling, river crossing, gorge walking, kayaking, rafting, jungle safari etc.  conducted during the trips help the members in overcoming inhibitions and fear and at the same time enhance inter personal skills.

The members are also encouraged to do wild life photography and essay writing about the trip and the winners are given attractive prizes.  The nature club gives most of the students an opportunity to break free from regular routine and experience the complex life in all its simplicity.  The major and satisfying achievement  of the nature club as well as the other units like cultural forum, KALA BHAGEERATHI, the sports association as well as the other associations is that the participants have an outstanding records in their academics improving from high first class to distinctions and more.   Students are provided cycles with certain discounts.  The BNM educational institutions believe that the students in this age group are bubbling with energy and need to relax as they cannot be studying all the time.

BNMIT also has a photography club for the students to learn professional photography. Technical Magazines are released in every department, so that students are upto-date with the technology and apply it in their project works. BNMIT also releases a college Magazine in which all the achievements of the students are showcased. Frequent Seminars are conducted on current issues and academic topics, which makes the students gain confidence and knowledge.

To help with the academics and extra curricular activities, BNMIT has a very user friendly Library with a large collection of technical and general books.  Apart from these, national and international journals and magazines on varied subjects are made available.  The library is computerized and fully automated including cataloguing, circulation, stock taking, plus instant browsing of the required title for its availability and location to the student.

The bar code system is installed for quick identification, efficient circulation.  It is manned by a highly dedicated Chief Librarian and support staff.

Apart from the academic books as above, the reference library also provides students with an exceptional collection of books on General Topics, Classics, Business and Time Management, Work Ethics, Social Responsibilities, Nature Conservation, Environment, Wildlife, Spirituality, Cultural Values and other important subjects for their all round development.

BNMIT gives equal importance to sports and fitness programs and our students not only participate and win prizes in various intercollegiate athletic meets, but also represents the University in Inter University Competitions.

BNMIT has organized sports events at the University level. The VTU Intercollegiate Basketball for Women and Men’s Volley Ball events were held at BNMIT recently. The latest VTU Inter collegiate Weight lifting, Power lifting, Best Physique competition was organized by BNMIT. The sports department is manned by the “Sports Authority of India” trained personnel and take care of not only sports but also physical well being and mental alertness of students with specific programs.

With the quality of education drawing students from distant places, BNMIT has provided Hostel facilities that are a home away from home.  The girls hostel is located on campus and the boys hostel is located close to the campus.  The hostels provide homely and hygienic food.

Students are encouraged to use two state-of-the-art gymnasiums housing the best of equipments imported from USA and South Korea for boys and girls.  Students are mandatorily provided training in de-stressing, stretching and scientific breathing exercises.  They are also given opportunity to take part in Art of Living Program for overall improvement in health and memory power.  Highly skilled and NIS trained personnel take care of the personal requirements of the students.

Thus, BNMIT is recognized as an institute which instills technical competence, confidence and it enthusiastically involves in extracurricular activities with a motto ‘beyond academics’.
