I am Vandna Prasad from Bansal College Of Engineering here sharing some views of mine. Hope all of you enjoy the read.
Since we all know that Education is the basic need of today’s world in every field. As the school is the base of the education, likewise the college is the best platform where the educated youngsters get ready for the future challenges. So each student is expected to get high ideas and best platform where they can set their personal development goal and get high academics in all of their courses, get full opportunities to develop & implement carrier plans. Therefore every student has expectation that his/her institute or college should be responsible for the delivery of good infrastructure, academics, material support, training opportunities and placements support. On the other side, college also has some expectation from their students that they honestly take these opportunities and leverage them for their own benefit & betterment. When I came to my college that is what I also expected. I expected that my college would give me a best environment where I put up my innovative ideas and grow as a professional. I am sure that as said earlier my college also had expectation from me in such form that I would honestly and sincerely leverage on the opportunities that it provided.
Whether I stood up to college’s expectation is for college to decide but whether college stood up to my expectation is for me to decide. This effort of mine is a humble initiative towards evaluating my alma mater, my 2nd home for the last 4 years-MY COLLEGE, Bansal College of Engineering, Mandideep. A college is expected to bring out qualified professionals at the end of the 4 years course. For doing that it needs to bring the talents of an individual, which most of the times are hidden to the student himself/herself, in forefront and push him/her to work towards it and achieve his/her desired professional end.
From students’ side I believe that to become a successful professional, HARD WORK, DETERMINATION & SINCERITY are three qualities that are very necessary for the students. Hard work to complete assignments and experiments on time, determination to learn thoroughly what is taught in class, sincerity to keep regularity in studies & attend college regularly.
So in this journey let me show you whether my college has provided me with these and whether I have been able to use this to my fullest. Let me embark on a journey down my memory lane, a journey that has given me so much, that has made me who I am today- MY COLLEGE.
ACADEMICS:-
A core area of a college’s deliverable is in the field of academics. In this area, I will rate my college higher than other colleges in my city. Let us see how? For academic excellence, regularity of studies and students’ attendance is a primary requirement. So on one side we see that in most of the colleges at Bhopal, classes are not held regularly and even the university syllabus is not completed forcing the students to study by their own self whereas on the other hand in my college even before start of a semester session, academic calendar is made jotting down the broad dates of unit wise completion of all subjects as well as including major events planned in that semester. Not only that this schedule is followed by the academic staff of the college which gives students great convenience in planning their studies. This is one of the major reasons of why our college’s result has been above par when compared to other colleges in the city. This is the reason why year after year, a student of our college has received Chancellor Award from University.
INVOLVEMENT WITH STUDENTS:-
A college is a place where a student spends 1/3rd of his day. So the quality of involvement he/she get there is therefore primarily important for him/her. One of the best things I notice in my college is the personal involvement of the college, much higher than many of the other colleges. For most colleges it is of less importance, what their students are actually doing and whether they are benefiting from the college or not, but in my college I see that a proper channel of communication and feedback has been built not only between students’ & college faculty but also the parents of the students . In every semester parents meeting becomes an important activity in the curriculum of the session where director & principal of the institute directly meet parents of each students. Through this activity parents come to known about their wards and what they do in the college, their result etc. Also every two months, intimation is sent to parents for shortage of attendance & result of the mid-semester examination.
PREPARING FOR PLACEMENTS:-
Every engineering student comes with a dream of achieving some professional excellence in their life. Some students wish to get into their dream companies, some wish to get into their desired higher education. Now all of these require students to clear competitive exams and qualify in the interview rounds. This cannot happen if students are not trained in the various facets of the selection process. Our college has been one of the very few colleges which has invested in training department, bringing in experts from different areas to help the students qualify in the process of selection. Our college also excels in this aspect by not passing on the cost of this training to students rather investing themselves in the process. Skill development in the students is the main motive of this training. Many of the expert faculties for personality development, reasoning, communication skill & for interview preparation are hired. This continuous effort from college has resulted in a much better placement record for year 2015 as compared to last year as well as other colleges.
FACILITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Basic Infrastructure: – On one side when I see the basis infrastructure facilities of my college and compare it with other colleges, I find my college building is much bigger than others. It holds the distinction of largest private engineering college of Bhopal. Other colleges, even if they are bigger in size, host multiple colleges and streams such as pharmacy, MBA etc in one campus whereas my college BCE Mandideep concentrates its efforts entirely to engineering. A large ground is situated inside the campus where the students play all outdoor games. A good facility of air-conditioned auditorium & seminar halls has a capacity of 1000 seating & an excellent stage to be used for all common functions & events. I attended many of the events & seminars in other colleges where I see lack of space most of the students are standing back side of the hall & many of them stands outside.
Commuting: – In my college the bus facility is also very good it help to communicate students specially those students who come from the long distance area such as- Itarsi & hoshangabad. So by which many of the students who live in this area which doesn’t afford the hostel cost they directly go to the college by bus.
Swacch College (Cleanliness):- When I visited many of the colleges which is considered largest group of colleges in Bhopal, it turned out to be a very unclean place but when I see in my college the importance of cleanliness is clearly visible. Canteen facility is very good & is a large spacious area, and special attention is given toward the cleanliness of the canteen. Systematic sitting arrangements are there, variety of refreshments, meals & unhygienic food items are available. Many colleges bring their canteen foods from nearby local hotels making it impossible for management of the college to control the quality of the food. But in my college canteen houses a big in house kitchen which is manned by able kitchen staff. The dishes prepared here are delicious, and well nutritious. Our college canteen can conveniently accommodate 200 students at a time, functioning in the campus.
Library and Laboratories: – Library is the knowledge base of every institute. A good library is the pre-requisite to a healthy intellectual environment. Our library qualifies as one of the better libraries amongst various institutes. Built on a very large area, the library houses more than 20000 books and periodicals. Not only the volume but the quality of our library is also worth mentioning. Almost all the books which are worth mentioning and originate from famous writer of respective fields are available in the library. Library is well equipped with modern facilities & resources in the form of books, print, project reports, daily employment newspaper, and extra newspapers. Our library is also a space where teachers and students can peacefully study what they want to without anyone disturbing the decorum of the library.
One thing that a student of engineering will always agree to is that practical knowledge is more important than theoretical knowledge. Well equipped laboratories facility and adequate machinery are available in every branch. So all the practical are well performed regularly by which the students get the practical knowledge about their subjects. Above 1000 of computer system are available in the computers labs all systems are connected to high speed 24 hour internets. Wi-fi connectivity has also been provided to all the academic departments.
MAKING STUDENTS COMFORTABLE:-
One of the prerequisites for making a student comfortable and making him/her feel at home is by initiating him/her with welcoming arms. In many colleges this does not happen though in theory all colleges shun ragging as an act but still is unable to control forms of exploitation both mental and physical that a student goes through. In this case ragging in my college is not only prohibited in theory but also in practice. In my college many anti ragging seminars are also held by which students come together against ragging and motivate other students to refrain from it.
CO CURRICULAR AND EXTRA CURRICULAR
Many types of co curricular and extra activities are held in our college in which all the faculties come together and help the students individually. Many types of activities are done here such as TECH MANTHAN, SRIJAN, Innovative Model Competitions etc . As I notice in other colleges such types of events & program even if held the students were not actively interested because of the lack of the personal involvement of the faculties, lack of innovative ideas & mainly the lack of competition.
Our college also provides an effective platform not only for the college students but also for the upcoming students of school; such as an “Innovative MP schools science model competition” was organized on 26th – 27th November 2013 at BCE. Our college is a remote center of IIT Mumbai for programs on “engineering mechanics”. A 2 weeks duration program was organized in January 2014 conducted by IIT Kharagpur which is on “signal and system”
Many types of the innovative programs are held in our college as compared to other colleges in which faculty members personally involved with the students. A prestigious competition on robotics organized by IIT Guwahati on 26th – 27th July 2013. Our students participated and won second prize at all India level. Every year our college participates in the Srijan, which is a state based competition for all private engineering colleges of MP. In the Srijan-2014, our college Bansal College of Engineering Mandideep was adjudged as the Best Private Engineering college of Madhya Pradesh.
OUR GURUS
Teachers are the key component process of converting the raw material students to the finished product of professional. The quality of teachers in our college is much better than other colleges’ teacher quality as far as I know from my interactions with my friends in other colleges. I see our faculty is well- prepared to teach each class, treating students with friendliness, providing a classroom atmosphere that encourages learning, and covering all the material outlined in the syllabus. This is the reason why students in my college actively attend the class, complete assignments on time, and participate in class by asking and answering question and contributing to discussions. When I see in other top colleges of Bhopal which are very famous but teaching is not their priority. Another very unique thing in our college is extra classes for weak and non performing students to improve their results.
I think knowledge will only add value in our life only when we will sincerely enquire about our doubts from our faculties and refer to books for deeper understanding of matter so self development is very necessary to the entire youngster & it is come when our college or institutes provide use expert guidance and our sincere effort also be required so we achieve perfection through practice. So every college has a responsibility to give an innovative & challenging surrounding & environment.

THE FINAL STAGE:-
Where the college leaves a student there the student starts his path of life. A person needs to create the path by walking, the path is not ready-made, lying there and waiting for. Thus for a Student to be successful he/she needs to create the path. Thus, for an institution to stand higher than its contemporaries it needs to make its students ready for that path that they are to create. And for that one thing that college should do is that college management should work upon the rules and regulations established by them and should take a check that they are being followed. For eg; one of the rule which is being mentioned in brochure of every institution is that “Decorum should be maintained inside the college campus”, which is being followed by only a few colleges. Decorum is maintained by discipline and discipline not only means to be quiet but in everything: in our attitude, behaviour, socially, personally, intellectually and psychologically. Discipline is the most important part of any institution which is being adopted in our college very strictly whether it be in academics, sports or socially, personally and intellectually. To have only knowledge or technical knowhow is not enough, inner discipline is the basic and most important part that every individual should possess. Besides, not sticking to only academics, teachers should also help the students to develop their interpersonal skills in various fields. As said, “when the student is ready, teacher will appear”. If the student is ready to do something in any other field besides academics, then teacher should also give his personal time to help an individual to develop and boost his talent, so that he could grow and dream of for a better future in the field he is much interested.
The college is a place of many stakeholders, students, teachers, parents, management and industry. There should not be any communication gap between these stakeholders. One of the positives of my college has been the personal involvement of the teachers in the student’s performance which helps the teacher to know the weakness of an individual and try their best to sort it out. Good communication is established not only between teachers and students but also between the parents of an individual and teachers. But that has to be extended to include the other stakeholders too.
Every institution/college says that they will provide the staff and students with the best facilities that they could, but they don’t seem to stand upon their words. The basic infrastructure of my college is not exceptionally better than other colleges but have all necessary facilities that could provide the students as well as teachers with the basic facilities that are needed. For eg; my college has a large ground situated inside the campus where the students can play all outdoor games, has good facility of air-conditioned auditorium, seminar hall has a capacity of approx. 1000 seating & an excellent stage used for all common functions as well as events. The basic and most healthy facilities are drinking water whose purity is thoroughly checked, canteen facility which is always kept clean and clean washrooms. These are some of the important necessities of an institution which should be fulfilled for clean, healthy and learning environment. Luckily my college has been one of them who stood by their promises but I hope that they remain such in the years to come and other colleges also inculcate that sense of responsibility.
Having air-conditioned classrooms, good laboratories, good library facilities or smart techniques of teaching with a small surrounding area and no facilities of games will not take any institution to the greater height and improve its performance. Since a proverb says, “Healthy mind makes a man wise and perfect”. Thus, a man can succeed in anything if he is healthy and it could be achieved only by doing physical work. Therefore, outdoor games are of utmost importance as these secrets the active hormones in our body which in turn increases our mental and physical abilities. This helps one to perform better in academics which will help him to be perfect in near future. Hence, along with the good academic facilities, good and large spacious playground facilities should also be provided by an institution. Having large playgrounds only is also not enough, but games periods and all the components required for the particular games should be given.
One of the best things of my college has been its openness to accept our feedback and requirements and work on it.
