Racism is bad for business, especially when it comes to kowtowing to explicit white nationalists. However, that has not stopped the worst people in America from descending upon Charlottesville, Virginia and Washington, DC for another “Unite the Right” rally on the anniversary of the last one, in which a woman was killed by one of these bigoted deviants. But DC restaurants are pushing back.
According to The Hill, quite a few establishments in Washington, DC are saying they will refuse service to the “Unite the Right” crowd. Dan Simons, who owns Founding Farmers, said the following of not serving the rally attendees:
Our mentality is we’re going to protect each other. This is our city. Our house. Our people.
There are times when a guest can be rude to an employee and you swap out the server. We’ve told our team: this isn’t what that is. You don’t have to be in a room with someone who’s advocating for your death and enslavement.”
Simons owns three establishments in the city, and he is not the only one who is pushing back against the wave of white supremacy that will be descending upon them all this weekend. Ellen Kassoff Gray, who owns Equinox, had similar sentiments:
I’ll proudly stay open and serve those who’re respectful and kind. But being a Jewish restaurant owner and having a pro-Nazi group come to town, would I refuse service? Yes, I would.”
Alan Popovsky is another business owner in the area, and instead of joining the fray and battling the bigots has decided that the only meal he’ll be open for is brunch on Sunday. There will be no dinner at his place that day because he doesn’t want white nationalists in his restaurant.
In short, there will be a bunch of hungry, angry white supremacists who have nowhere to eat during their hate rally 2.0. Good on these business owners for being willing to take the financial hit in order to stand up for what’s right and to denounce the white supremacy that is so rampant in Donald Trump’s America.
